Arts in Healthcare Certificate Program

CAHRE's new Arts in Healthcare Certificate program accepts applications throughout the year; there are no application deadlines.

The Arts in Healthcare Certificate program is designed for three populations: 1) University of Florida undergraduate students; 2) undergraduate students at partner institutions; and 3) graduate students, undergraduate students from other universities, and professionals.

The Certificate recognizes practical competency and academic achievement in the use of the arts to enhance individual and community health and to impact healthcare environments. Students who complete the requirements for the Certificate in the Arts in Healthcare gain unique life experience and capabilities. This certificate, recognizing these special skills, can serve as a credential for developing career options and will encourage healthcare facilities to expand or initiate arts programs.

Requirements and Pre-requisites: Although students from any major as well as professionals may apply to enter the Arts in Healthcare Certificate program, completion of the certificate program requires a minimum intermediate level competency in a primary artistic discipline as well as basic level exploration of a secondary artistic discipline at an accredited university. The student must have completed at least one intermediate level studio/technique course in the primary discipline, and must take one basic level course in a secondary discipline. To qualify for the Arts in Healthcare Certificate, the student must attain a 3.0 average in all courses included in the certificate curriculum.

Procedures: Students interested in obtaining this certificate should apply by their junior year to the Director of the Center for the Arts in Healthcare or the designated certificate coordinator at the home institution. The director or coordinator will apprise students of Certificate requirements and create a personalized plan for undertaking all certificate components and clinical practice. The director will send student information to the appropriate school advisor, who will verify the successful completion of all requirements. The application process begins with an interview at the student’s home institution with the designated coordinator as well as an interview with the CAHRE director.  Following the interviews, an application may be submitted to the Center for the Arts in Healthcare.

Capstone:  As the student nears completion of all certificate requirements, a capstone will be scheduled.  For UF students, the capstone consists of an interview and self-evaluation and as many hours of clinical observation as the program director deems necessary; for non-UF students, the capstone consists of a one-week residency at UF.  The capstone residency will include 20 hours of clinical practice, an interview and additional consultations as needed.  If necessary, the student may be asked to complete additional clinical hours before the certificate is awarded.
