In
2006, Shands Arts in Medicine (AIM) developed the Traffic Art and
Dance Exchange program for adolescents and young adults with SCD.
The Traffic Art and Dance Exchange is a performance-based dance
program which includes weekly rehearsals and periodic public performances.
Under the supervision of AIM Artist in Residence and UF School of Theatre
and Dance Faculty member, Jill Sonke-Henderson, along with several UF
dancers and AIM volunteers, participants engage in movement, including
conditioning and stretching, choreography, and various aspects of performance
production such as design and construction of costumes and sets. The program
encourages peer cooperation, support, and engagement as well as self-expression.
Social networking among participants and families within the group is
intended to reduce social isolation and increase utilization of community
resources for those coping with SCD.
