VITAL VISIONARIES Vital Visionaries Florida 2008Vital Visionaries is a program originally created by Johns Hopkins College of Medicine to facilitate contact between medical students and older adults to increase familiarity and comfort with seniors. In Baltimore, the pairs went to the American Visionaries Art Museum. The National Institute on Aging is endorsing repetitions of the project with evaluation instruments to determine the program’s effectiveness. In Gainesville, groups will go to the Harn Museum of Art four times in the spring for two hour sessions, including guided viewing of art exhibits and interactive art making projects with the partners. Participating students will receive small stipends ($100). The project is funded by the National Institute on Aging with additional support from the UF College of Medicine’s Department of Aging and Geriatrics and the Fresh Market. The dates of the sessions are as follows: Sat. April 12: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sun. April 13: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sat. April 26: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sun. April 27: 2:00-4:00 p.m. The first session will involve a pairing activity to form partnerships for the duration of the program, followed by guided viewing of a portion of the exhibit: Paradigms and the Unexpected: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Shey Collection. Then the group will have time to converse while working together on a project. All sessions will involve guided viewing and interactive activities based upon the art viewing. Projects will vary from session to session, but will be guided and structured to stress partners’ interaction and process. Group sharing of ideas may be included as appropriate. The sessions are planned to stimulate communication and to be entertaining. For examples, watch the video documentary posted on the Vital Visionaries page (back one page) Participants must commit to attending all four sessions and to completing pre-and post surveys and evaluation forms.
