Sculpture for the Soul: Art by O.L. Samuels 4/10- 8/28

O.L. Samuels is one of America’s most respected self-taught artists. At age 78, O.L. Samuels is a talented African-American Florida folk artist who draws on his life experiences to create unique and inspiring wooden sculptures. Born on a plantation in Wilco County, Georgia, he left home at the age of eight to find his way in the world. His travels have provided him with many interesting experiences such as being a professional boxer and a tree surgeon. He also recovered from a life-threatening accident which has led him to become a very spiritual person.

His inspiration for carving wood came from the advice given to him by his grandmother who said he should carve on a wooden spool whenever he felt depressed. To this day, O.L Samuels creates sculptures of different animals, people, cars, and mystical creatures out of tree-trunks, branches and roots. The magical art that he creates are often painted on and speckled with splashes of bright color that give them a vibrant and appealing texture.

The art of O.L. Samuels is in several permanent museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Orange Hill Folk Art Gallery, the Arkansas Arts Center, and in many private collections as well.

Reception: Friday, August 28, 7-9 PM
