General Facts & Information
  • The School of Art and Art History was established in 1948 and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
  • The Harn Eminent Scholar Program in Art History is a collaborative effort between the College of Fine Arts School of Art and Art History and the Harn Museum of Art. Inaugurated in 1993 the scholar in residence holds the Harn Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair in Art History, and is selected for exemplary teaching, scholarship and publications, in addition to notable experience in museum work.
  • New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature in 1984 as a Center of Excellence in the visual and performing arts. A unique collaborative venture of the University of Florida, Miami-Dade Community College, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the school provides a comprehensive program of artistic training, academic development and preparation for careers in dance, music, theater and visual arts. New World School of the Arts is located near major cultural, entertainment and government facilities in downtown Miami. www.mdcc.edu/nwsa/
  • In 1999, the Digital Worlds Institute was established as a collaborative effort between the College of Fine Arts and the College of Engineering. The Digital Worlds Institute exists to nurture leading edge research and education between engineering and the arts, utilizing the tools of digital technology and culture. In the fall of 2001 the first class of art students in the Digital Arts and Science Program began working toward their BA and MA degrees under the auspices of the DWI.

Resources

  • College of Fine Arts Visual Resources Center - This facility houses a comprehensive collection of more than 300,000 art and architecture 35mm slides.
  • Architecture and Fine Arts Library - The Architecture and Fine Arts Library opened in 1965 with holdings of about 20,000 volumes. Today, AFA ranks third (after the libraries of the University of Virginia and Duke University) in having the largest visual arts library collection in the Southeast.
  • Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art - Located on the University of Florida campus the Harn Museum of Art is one of the largest university museums in the southeastern United States.
  • Florida Museum of Natural History - The Florida Museum of Natural History is the largest natural history museum in the southeast, with historical, ethnological and natural history holdings.

Research Support
