History

1929 | A painting and drawing program is established with the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

1929 | The first BFA degrees in Fine Arts are awarded.

1965 | The Architecture and Fine Arts complex, including the University Gallery, is completed. The Art Department’s Annual Art Faculty Exhibition is inaugurated with the opening of the gallery, marking one of its most important activities.

1975 | The College of Fine Arts was established.

1980 | The studio programs move into a new building, Fine Arts “D.” The building has large studio/classrooms with north natural light, darkrooms and faculty offices.

1982 | The first 5-day student trip to New York City, led by Professor Richard Heipp, takes place. Occurring every year, it becomes a regular event within the Department.

1984 | The Annual Student Juried Arts Exhibition is held for the first time.

1990 | The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art opens as part of the University’s new cultural complex.

1990 | The Art Education program moves from the College of Education to the Department of Art.

1992 | Professor Brian Slawson launches Ligature, the annual student-run design event.

1992 | The degree programs in the Department of Art are approved by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

1993 | Workshop for the Art Research and Practice (WARP), an innovative approach to teaching art at the foundation level, is initiated in the Department of Art.

1994 | The University continues to strengthen its artistic presence via the College’s new partnership with the New World School of the Arts in Miami.

1994 | Distinguish Service Professor Emeritus Hiram Williams and Graduate Research Professor Jerry Uelsmann are named to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

1994 | The Harn Eminent Scholar Chair in Art History is established to link the Harn Museum of Art and the art history program in the Department of Art.

1995 | The College of Fine Arts and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences begin a collaborative summer program in Rome, Italy for students to study art and culture.

1995 | The College of Fine Arts celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

1995 | The 30th Annual Art Faculty Exhibition is held at the Harn Museum of Art.

1998 | The Department of Art becomes the School of Art and Art History.

1998 | The master’s degree program in Museum Studies is approved by the Florida Board of Regents.

1999 | The Digital Arts and Sciences major is launched in conjunction with the College of Engineering.

2000 | The College of Fine Arts Celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

2000 | The PhD degree program in Art History is approved by the Florida Board of Regents.

2003 | The School of Art and Art History’s office moves into newly renovated space on the first floor of Fine Arts Building “C”.

2003 | The WARP Program moves into a 6,000 square foot warehouse off campus during the fall semester. The building boasts several classrooms and a large exhibition space.

2003 | The 39th Annual Art Faculty Exhibition was held in Miami in conjunction with Art Basel.
