Program Requirements Degree Requirements M.A. Degree Requirements The MA in art history requires 36 credit hours. Students take 28 hours of graduate courses with at least five art history professors. Up to nine credits may be taken in related areas with the approval of the chair of the supervisory committee. (For example, those interested in African art may want to take advantage of courses offered through the Center for African Studies.) In addition, three credits must be taken in methodology and bibliography in preparation for thesis research. Six credits of thesis research culminating in an original thesis complete the degree requirements. Ph.D. Degree Requirements Reading proficiency in French or German (or a language more appropriate to the major area of study) must be demonstrated before thesis research is begun. This may be demonstrated by passing a departmental language exam (should be taken at the beginning of the fall semester of the second year or by passing two semesters of graduate reading courses.) Students should see the art history coordinator for details concerning the language exam. Language courses are not applicable toward degree credit. Deadlines The Application Deadline for the Art History Program is Jan. 10. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for admission as early as possible. The Graduate Assistantship/Fellowship application deadline is also Jan. 10. Assistantships are generally offered only at the beginning of the fall term and students applying for spring are not eligible for fellowships.
