Graduate Art Education

The University of Florida offers two programs in Art Education that lead to a Master of Arts in Art Education. Post-baccalaureate students may earn an art teaching certificate without a Master's degree.

Admissions Procedures

Prospective students applying for the MA in Art Education must:

  1. Meet *Graduate School requirements for admission;
  2. Hold an undergraduate degree in art education and be certified to teach art in the United States;
  3. Submit a portfolio of 10-20, 35mm slides of the applicant's personal art work;
  4. Submit a research paper, article, or other sample of academic writing;
  5. Submit three letters of recommendation;
  6. Complete assistantship/fellowship application if interested in financial support.

* Requirements of the Graduate School include: (1) a minimum Verbal-Quantitative total score of 1000 on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); and (2) a minimum grade average of B for all upper-division undergraduate work.


MA in Art Education with Thesis

The MA in Art Education with Thesis requires a minimum of 36 credit hours, of which, ARE 6047, ARE 6141, and ARE 6148 are required. In addition, students must take 3 credits of an approved ARE education elective; 9 credits of studio electives; 3 credits of art history; 6 credits in art education, art studio, art history, or education electives; 3 credits of ARE 6705; and 3 credits of ARE 6971.


MA in Art Education with Project in Lieu of Thesis

The MA in Art Education with Project in Lieu of Thesis requires a minimum of 36 credit hours, of which, ARE 6047, ARE 6141, and ARE 6148 are required. In addition, students must take 3 credits of an approved ARE education elective; 9 credits of studio electives; 3 credits of art history; 6 credits in art education, art studio, art history, or education electives; 3 credits of ARE 6705; and 3 credits of ARE 6973.


Application Deadlines: Fall- February 1; Spring- October 1

Prospective students are encouraged to apply for admission as early as possible. The Graduate Assistantship/Fellowship application deadline is also February 1. Assistantships are generally offered only at the beginning of the fall term and students applying for spring are not eligible for fellowships.


Late Applications

Late applications are accepted; however, students will be considered for admission and assistantships according to available space in the program.


Faculty

Craig Roland

Before coming to the University of Florida, Craig Roland taught Art Education classes at Eastern Illinois University and Purdue University. His research activities include exploring ways that technology can be used as an instructional and creative tool in art classrooms. His publications include a chapter titled "Distance Learning and Art Education" in the NAEA Anthology on New Technologies in Art and a chapter titled "Using Journals to Promote Thinking in Preservice Art Teachers" in the NAEA Anthology on Preservice Art Teacher Education.
