ARH 2002 Introduction to Art: The Artistic Experience
This course provides an introduction to the Artistic Experience by examining different
ideas, approaches and purposes of art.
ARH 2050 Introduction to the Principles and History of Art 1
This course covers art and architecture from ancient times to the beginning of the Renaissance.
The course introduces students to the major monuments and to the basic principles of
art. It places works of art in their cultural contexts.
ARH 2051 Introduction to the Principles and History of Art 2
This course is a continuation of ARH 2050 and covers art and architecture from the Renaissance
to the present.
ARH 2401: Non-Western Art
This course provides an introduction to the various visual arts of Sub-Saharan Africa,
Pacific, Native America, India, China and Japan, from pre-historic to recent.
ARH 3115 Egyptian and Near Eastern Art
This course is a general survey of the art and architecture of Egypt and the Near East
from the beginnings of civilization until the Persian period. The course presents the
major monuments of each culture by comparing art of the two areas within successive
time periods. Its aim is to acquaint students with the monuments and concepts behind
them.
ARH 3130 Greek Art
This course covers the art and architecture of ancient Greece beginning with Minoan Crete
and ending in the Hellenistic age. The course provides students with a general understanding
of the major monuments and ideas of the region in the periods covered.
ARH 3171 Etruscan and Roman Art
This course provides students with an understanding of the art and architecture of the
Italian peninsula from the Etruscan period through the Roman Empire. The course exposes
students to the major monuments and concepts of the periods covered.
ARH 3421 Art in the Age of Revolution
This course covers topics in the late 18th and early 19th century, a period that includes
Neo-Classicism and Romanticism. Works of art to be consdered in the cultural, political,
social, and aesthetic contexts in which they were made. Particular emphasis is given
to the politics of style during this period of revolution and resection.
ARH 3422 The Beginnings of Modernism
This course covers the visual arts in Europe in the second half of the 19th century,
focusing on the emergence of an avant-garde and formulation of a modernist aesthetic
with reference to industrialized, urban culture, especially in Paris. Addresses Realism,
Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism.
ARH 3423 Gender, Representation and the Visual Arts
This course is a consideration of historical and theoretical issues posed for visual
media by attention to issues of gender, with particular emphasis on women artists.
ARH 3525 The Arts of West Africa
This course covers the traditional arts of the equatorial forests, the savannahs to the
south of them, and portions of Eastern and Southern Africa.
ARH 3526 The Arts of Central Africa
This course covers the traditional arts of the equatorian forests, the savannahs to the
south of them, and portions of Eastern and Southern Africa.
ARH 3585 The Arts of Oceania
This course covers the visual arts of Oceania (Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia) within
the context of the cultures which produced them.
ARH 3605 American Indian Art
This course covers the visual arts of the American Indians north of Mexico from the prehistoric
era to the present.
ARH 3610 American Art
This course covers the architecture, painting, sculpture and decorative arts in Anglo-America
from the 17th century beginnings to the end of the 19th century.
ARH 3650 Latin American Art
This course covers the architecture, painting, sculpture, and important minor arts of
colonial and modern Latin America.
ARH 3656 Ancient South American Art
This course covers the art and architecture of pre-Columbian Lower Central and South
America, focusing on the Andean Indian civilizations.
ARH 3657 Mesoamerican Art
covers the art and architecture of pre-Columbian civilizations of Mexico and the Maya
area from about 3000 B.C. until the Spanish Conquest in A.D. 1521.
ARH 3800 Criticism of Art
This course reviews the principle theories in the history of criticism. Analysis and
evaluation of works of art. Problems in the criticism of contemporary art. Required
for Art History majors.
ARH 4135 Greek Sculpture
This course provides an in-depth examination of Greek sculpture from its beginnings in
the Geometric period through the Hellenistic period. By focusing on a single medium,
the course provides the student with a specialized understanding of sculpture within
the broader context of Greek artistic goals and interests. Students are expected to
have a survey-level awareness of Greek art, but may not necessarily have taken an upper-division
course in the subject area.
ARH 4200 Early and Medieval and Byzantine Art
This course covers the art and architecture of Europe and the Mediterranean region from
approximately the fourth to the fourteenth centuries A.D.
ARH 4251 Romanesque and Gothic Art
This course covers the art and architecture of Europe during the Romanesque and Gothic
periods.
ARH 4304 Italian Renaissance Architecture
This course focuses on the architecture of the Italian Renaissance from the mid fourteenth
century through the mid sixteenth century.
ARH 4310 Early Renaissance Art in Italy
This course covers Italian art from 1200 to 1500 with an emphasis upon painting and sculpture.
ARH 4312 Late Renaissance Art in Italy
This course is a continuation of ARH 4310 and covers Italian art and architecture from
1460 to 1590. Emphasis on painting and sculpture.
ARH 4331 Renaissance Art in Northern Europe
covers sources and development of late 14th, 15th, and 16th century art outside Italy
with an emphasis upon painting and prints.
ARH 4350 Baroque Art in Europe
This course covers European art and architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries with
an emphasis upon painting and sculpture.
ARH 4356 French Art of the Ancient Regime 1650-1780
This course deals with major artists, artistic movements, works and issues in art theory
and criticism in Europe from the late 17th century to the 1780s. Special emphasis is
given to painting in France and to the reaction against the Rococo.
ARH 4359 Eighteenth Century European Art Seminar.
Topics in 18th century European art.
ARH 4431 Nineteenth Century Art
This course covers European art and architecture in the nineteenth century including
Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism. Emphasis
upon painting and sculpture.
ARH 4452 Early Twentieth Century Art
This course covers European and American art from Post-Impressionism to 1945 with an
emphasis upon painting and sculpture.
ARH 4453 Mid-Twentieth Century Art
This course is a continuation of ARH 4452. Emphasis on American art from the 1940s through
the 1960s.
ARH 4454 Late 20th Century Art
This course is a continuation of ARH 4453 and covers the major movements in international
art since about 1970 to the present. Focus is on the theory and various expressions
of Post-Modernism.
ARH 4710 History of Photography
This course offers a survey of major technical, stylistic and critical directions in
photography, nineteenth century onward.
ARH 4931 Art History Seminar
This course offers in-depth discussion of selected fields of art, either a period and
area or a topic. Analysis of art historical writings through class presentations and
written papers.
