Course Descriptions

ART 2704C Figurative Ceramics
An introduction to figure sculpture and life modeling using fired clay; including building, surfacing, and firing techniques. Class includes perceptual studies from the model and concept development centering on using the figure as a vehicle for personal expression. Class format includes slide and video presentations, a life model sequence, and critiques.

ART 2456 Computers in Art Education
This course is designed to introduce students to applications of computers in the field of art education. Emphasis is on the use of computer hardware and software for individual creative expression. The use of the Internet as a teaching and learning tool is also explored.

ART 2757C Ceramics: 3D Conceptualization
An introduction to three-dimensional form and design concepts using fired clay; including handforming techniques, an introduction to glazing (fired color) and electric kiln firing.

ART 2773C Ceramics: Surface and Form
An introduction to vessel design and concepts using handform techniques of pinch, coil, and slab. Investigation of color and surface in relationship to three-dimensions are emphasized through glaze techniques and electric firing.

ART 3762C Vessel Aesthetic 1
Provides an introduction to wheel throwing with a focus on vessel design, high-fire materials and the use of gas kilns are taught. Historical precedents and contemporary examples are covered.

ART 3764C Ceramic Sculpture 1
An introduction to ceramic sculpture including an overview of historic precedents and contemporary examples. Concept development, and sculpture techniques including modelong, carving, and plaster mold-making are introduced. Projects focus on low-fire materials, glazes which enhance sculpture, and electric kiln firing.

ART 3768C Ceramic Sculpture
This course involves studies at the intermediate level in experimental sculpture processes using fired clay, plaster, and latex mold-making as well as technical and aesthetic explorations with large scale works. Historical and contemporary precedents of ceramic sculpture are presented. Concept development and expression of ideas through sculptural form are core elements in the course.

ART 3784C Vessel Aesthetic 2
This course offers investigations at the intermediate level of technical, aesthetic and conceptual issues in the pottery language. Students study the formulation of clay and glaze materials. Development of personalized expression through vessel forms is emphasized.

ART 4760C Advanced Ceramics
This course allows students to focus on advanced technical and creative problems with a focus on developing personal work and professional practices preparation.

ART 4905C Independent Study
This course permits students to take independent studies in ceramics when all required course work is completed, or when a specific area of study is not covered in a scheduled course.

ART 4955C Senior Project
This course focuses on the selection, promotion installation and exhibition of a body of work. Students are required to write an artist's statement and plan and actualize an exhibition of their work.
