Portfolio Recommendations

Why do I need a portfolio?

In order to be admitted to the University of Florida’s School of Art and Art History upper division art program, you are required to assemble a collection of artwork. This portfolio should contain your best and most recent artwork. The entire application helps the Ceramics Area evaluate your achievements, as well as artistic and academic potential.

Portfolio Content Recommendations

Select pieces of work that best represent you and your artistic abilities. There is no formula for selecting the “right” portfolio. The final decision of what you put in your portfolio is up to you! Faculty will tell you to submit your best work. Your portfolio should represent your abilities in the 3D areas including works from courses in: Ceramics, Sculpture and/or Three Dimensional Design. Although we recommend that you focus on representing your three dimensional artwork, we also would like to see your strength in 2 dimensional design and/or drawing. Please include 2-4 samples of this type of artwork.

Consider the following recommendations when compiling your slide portfolio:

  • Make certain your portfolio is of the best quality possible and is an accurate representation of your strongest work overall.
  • Select your best overall work!
  • Select representative examples that depict your abilities in and demonstrate an understanding of:
    • Three-dimensional design concepts and visual organization.
    • Development of skills and craftsmanship in areas of: handforming, wheelthrowing, modeling, carving, and/or construction.
    • Development of concept and idea.
    • Development of two dimensional design concepts.
    • Development of perceptual drawing abilities.
  • Attempt to assemble a portfolio that shows strength as well as a variety of approaches.
