Computer Recommendations One aspect of our program is based on the compelling need to produce technically and creatively qualified students for careers in design. The graphic design program itself has been around since the mid 1960's but Fall 2005 will mark the tenth year of our "computer integrated studio" where students personally own their computer systems and where those systems (and people) are gathered into our studio learning environment. Recently, the university has extended this access requirement campus-wide to all majors: "Access to and on-going use of a computer will be required for all students to complete their degree programs successfully. Effective with the Summer B 1998 term, the University of Florida expects each student entering the junior year, as well as each student new to the university, to acquire computer hardware and software appropriate to his or her degree program. Competency in the basic use of a computer is a requirement for graduation. Class assignments may require use of a computer, academic advising and registration can be done by computer and official university correspondence is often sent via e-mail. While the university offers limited access to computers through its computer labs, most students will be expected to purchase or lease a computer that is capable of dial-up or Internet, graphical access to the World Wide Web, and productivity functions such as word processing and spreadsheet calculation. Costs of meeting this requirement will be included in financial aid considerations". Working together in the studio, not alone at home, is at times inconvenient but critically important in order to build a vibrant community of learners. Thereby, we are asking each student to install their systems in our student graphic design studio (Room 316 FAC). The studio facilities include a safe and secure workspace, reliable electrical system, and direct high-speed Internet access. The first seven years of the plan have proven to be a remarkable success and perhaps a national model. Our graphic design students now have a superior level of access to technology combined with a strong community spirit a formula for excellence. Financial Aid Because this is now an institutional requirement, it has been determined that computer costs can be considered allowable costs for students who qualify for financial aid. Accordingly, Student Financial Affairs has added costs for access to a computer into the budgets for these students. For more information, contact your financial adviser in the Office of Student Financial Affairs (352-392-1275). College of Fine Arts faculty and staff cannot answer financial questions, please contact the Office of Financial Aid directly. Also, Apple offers a student computer loan program which may be of interest to those who do not qualify for other forms of financial aid. Security Although the university has installed several security precautions - a special electronically locked door and lockable computer storage units - we recommend that you investigate any additional steps to protect your equipment which may include adding your computer system on to your parent's home owners insurance policy or your own rental policy. There has not been a significant incident since we began our program. The Recommended Computer System Visit our most current recommendations here.
