The department of Creative Photography at the University of
Florida offers a provocative and experimental curriculum in the setting of a large,
diversified university. As one of the most highly regarded programs of graduate
and undergraduate study in photography in the United States, we draw on substantial
faculty strengths in the broad field of contemporary visual inquiry.
Each student is encouraged to develop her or his personal artwork through a constructive
dialogue with peers, faculty and the community at large. We particularly encourage work
which engages the future trajectories of photography and related practices (such as installation,
performance and electronic media) and which develops out of an informed inquiry into
the histories, theories and practices of photography. Accordingly, we view our cooperative
relationships, with other areas of the School of Art and Art History such as sculpture,
painting, printmaking and performance, as well as those outside the area such as English,
Film Studies, and Architecture, as significant resources, and believe in fostering the
possibility of interdisciplinary exchange. The Program also stresses questions of dissemination
and audience. While students are encouraged to utilize traditional venues, we also strongly
emphasize the importance of the creation of alternative exhibitions in public spaces.
We understand operations in public space to include not only the material production
of site specific installation work, but also interventions in the burgeoning field of
electronic communication.
Facilities
Our program focuses attention on the integration of traditional photographic practices
with new technologies within the structure of the area curriculum. Our traditional lab
includes a full array of black and white and color equipment including a Kreonite color
processor which prints up to 40 inches in width. Entry-level digital courses are taught
in well-equipped computer labs administered by centralized University computing facilities.
Graduate and advanced undergraduate students have access to the Photography area's Hyper
Arts Laboratory production facility equipped with Macintosh computers and up to date
versions of the most prevalent production software, including a G4 video editing station
and an Epson 9000 digital printer which prints up to 42 inches in width. We provide a
private darkroom for each graduate student, equipped with enlargers having color or black
and white heads accommodating up to 4"x 5" format. Undergraduates work in a group facility
area equipped for both black and white and color processing. There is a studio and copy
room facility available to all students in the area.
Seminar
The Graduate Photography/Interdisciplinary Seminar provides the opportunity for structured
critique and interaction, with all faculty members and graduate students from the area
present. As an extension of our emphasis on interdisciplinary exchange, students and
faculty from other disciplines are encouraged to attend, creating an environment of lively
debate and exchange. All Photo faculty members are also available by appointment, and
students are encouraged to meet for individual critiques and advice. Additionally, there
are vigorous programs of visiting artists, theorists and historians to the School, to
the Harn Museum, and to the University at large.
