Application Procedures

Applying to the School of Art & Art History can be a bit complicated. To ensure that your application gets the best care and attention possible, it is important that you understand how our application procedures work.


Admission Requirements

Incoming Freshmen

Admission for freshman students is administered through the university's Office of Admissions. For information on admission guidelines refer to the General Requirements for Admission section of the student catalog and/or the Office of Admissions website. At this time incoming freshman do not submit a portfolio for admission into the University of Florida.

Freshman and Sophomore Students currently at UF but not majoring in Art or Art History

Admission for freshman and sophomore students who would like to change their major into an art studio major must submit a conditional portfolio. Students may not change their major into an art studio major after having completed more than 50 credits (this includes current enrollment).Please see the undergraduate advisor to find out details about this process.

Those students who are interested in changing their major into art history must complete ARH 2050 and ARH 2051 with a grade no lower than a B prior to gaining admission into art history. Students may not change their major into an art or art history major if they are currently on probation in their college. Students may not change their major into an art history major after having completed 90 credits (this includes current enrollment).

Transfer Students

Your first step is to submit an application for admission to the University of Florida.

The Office of Admission determines the transferability of credit earned at other institutions. Students may transfer no more than 60 hours from a community college as part of the hours required for a UF degree. The 60 credit hour transfer limit does not apply to coursework taken at a four-year institution. Students who have achieved advanced upper division status, 90 credits or more, at a four-year institution may not be admitted. Students are encouraged to complete their degree at their current institution and consider the University of Florida for graduate degree programs.

The admissions application deadlines listed here and in the student catalog are strictly enforced (also listed on the web at www.reg.ufl.edu/application-deadlines.html). Transfer students who do not have a completed application on file by the published deadlines, including all required documentation, transcripts, etc., will not be considered for admission and must apply for a subsequent term. So be sure all of your credentials (transcripts, test scores, etc.) are sent to the University of Florida Office of Admissions ASAP. Art Education majors need to submit FTCE test scores. If any portion of the application is late, the Admissions Office will deny the application.

Upper-division transfer students (defined as applicants with at least 60 credit hours) are admitted to the college for the fall or summer B term, provided they fulfill the following requirements:

1. An Associate of Arts Degree (Florida community college transfers only). Students at four-year institutions must have at least 60 transferable credits.

2. Completion of all pre-professional courses with the necessary GPA (3.0 for all degrees: B.A., B.F.A. and B.A.A.E., with the exception of Art History which can be located at #7). The eight courses are as follows:

    • 2 Dimensional Design
    • 3 Dimensional Design
    • Drawing 1
    • Drawing 2
    • Art History 1
    • Art History 2
    • 2 Studio Courses in the major that you want to apply, i.e. if you are interested in Graphic Design you need to have two courses in Graphic Design in order to apply

*some majors require more completed coursework. See specific majors listed below (Art History - #7, Art Education - #5, Digital Media - #6).

Please note that both the Office of Admissions and the School of Art & Art History (SAAH) Advising Office must have grades for at least six of the eight pre-professional courses before a tentative admission decision can be made. Students must also provide proof to the School of Art & Art History Office that any remaining pre-professional courses will be completed prior to enrolling at UF. All pre-requisite courses must be completed prior to enrolling at the University of Florida. If any course is missing, the SAAH can reverse the acceptance decision at any time.

3. Students applying for studio programs must submit a portfolio that passes review by the SAAH portfolio review committee. The Portfolio deadline for the Summer B or Fall semesters is March 15th. For all portfolio applications and other materials being submitted to the SAAH, please follow these guidelines and this application process. We are very particular about how we want you to submit these materials to us.

Note: All programs accept portfolios only for Summer B/Fall admissions. Portfolio applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. on March 15th. The portfolio review package deadlines listed in the catalog are strictly enforced (also listed on this site at http://www.arts.ufl.edu/art/Resources/advising/advising_portfolio.asp)

4. The studio requirements listed above are the minimum requirements. The SAAH highly recommends that all students interested in transferring into any one of our majors should take more than the listed studio courses.

5. Students interested in applying to the Art Education program must submit test scores for the GK (General Knowledge) portion of the FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exam). If students have taken and passed all portfions of the CLAST before July 1, 2002 - these CLAST scores can count for the FTCE requirement. For information about the FTCE, please visit the following website: www.fldoe.org. In addition to the pre-reqs listed above, Art Education majors must also complete:

    • Introduction to Art Education or Introduction to Education
    • Teaching Diverse Populations
    • Introduction to Psychology
    • MGF 1106

*please note that Art Education students are required to focus in on one studio area in the upper division (3/4000 area). You must choose one of the following areas to focus on while you are at UF. The areas are ceramics, drawing, painting, digital media, printmaking or sculpture.
The two studio courses (from the pre-requisite courses) in the major that you want to focus in on come from these listed art studio areas.

6. Students interested in applying to the Digital Media program must complete the following pre-requisite courses, as well as the 8 pre-reqs listed above:

    • MAC 1147 (Pre-calculus)
    • a computer art course (can be considered one studio course in the major)
    • a video art course (can be considered one studio course in the major)
    • an animation course or graphic design course

7. Students applying to the Art History program must submit a letter of intent stating why the student wishes to pursue an Art History major. Letters of intent must be submitted to the School of Art and Art History by March 15th for Summer B or Fall semesters, and October 15th for the Spring semester. The letter of intent should be approximately 250-350 words, double-spaced. This letter should communicate your intentions for pursuing a degree in art history at the University of Florida. This letter should be sent directly to the Undergraduate Advising Office for the School of Art and Art History. It is SEPERATE from the University of Florida's transfer application materials. Please address the envelope accordingly:

    Completion of all pre-professional courses with the necessary GPA in the courses listed below (3.0 for the Art History B.A. degree).

    The eight courses are as follows:

    • 2 Dimensional Design
    • 3 Dimensional Design
    • Art History 1 (ARH 2050)
    • Art History 2 (ARH 2051)
    • Non-Western Art History (ARH 2401)
    • a foreign language (French or German) thru the Intermediate level (usually takes 3 courses)

    All SAAH programs require a G.P.A. of 3.0.

 

Transfer Students Accepted into another College at UF who want to change their major into art

Transfer students who have been accepted into a major outside of SAAH must complete all of the pre-requisite courses at another institution and then follow the same application process as listed above for transfer students.

Step by Step Application Procedures for Transfer Students:

  • Your first step is to submit an application for transfer admission to the University of Florida's central Office of Admissions. Keep in mind the deadline dates for all School of Art and Art History applications is March 1st for Summer B and Fall semesters. These are FIRM deadlines. Check the Admissions deadlines page to confirm these dates through the following link: www.reg.ufl.edu/application-deadlines.html.
  • Confirm UF Admissions deadlines.
  • Your next step is to make sure all of your credentials (transcripts, test scores, etc.) are sent to the University of Florida Office of Admissions ASAP. Art Education majors need to submit FTCE test scores. If any portion of the application is late, the Admissions Office will deny the application.
  • Then, if you are a BFA , Art Education, or Visual Art Studies major you need to request a Portfolio Application Package. You may download a copy from the link below. (At this time incoming freshman do not submit a portfolio for admittance into the University of Florida.) Be advised the deadline to submit the Portfolio Application to the School of Art and Art History is March 15. This is separate from the UF transfer application which is due March 1.
