Overview
of the Program: The Master of Arts in art education
is intended for students interested in pursuing advanced
study in art education and who hold an undergraduate degree
in art education, art studio, or art history. The two-year,
36-credit program emphasizes the development of a comprehensive,
critical understanding of the field of art education, while
also allowing students the freedom to pursue an area of
specialization including art advocacy, art criticism, art
history, studio art, assessment and evaluation, child growth
and development, community arts, cultural studies, curriculum
theory, museum education, philosophy of art education, technology,
or art education research.
The M.A. program provides opportunities
for broad and in-depth advanced study of art education,
studio art, art history, and other fields related to a student’s
personal interests. Because of the program’s small
size and flexibility, our graduate students receive individual
attention and are able to tailor their program of study
to fit their particular interests and needs. Students pursue
graduate studies in art education in small seminars and
independent research projects in close consultation with
faculty members. Courses in art studio and art history are
taken with graduate students in those areas. Teaching assistantships
are available to all qualified graduate students in art
education to teach sections of ARE 4314: Art Education for
Elementary Schools.
