As you think about your graduate school application (and whether you should apply at all), take advantage of books and web sources for guidance. Rather than going to general career sites (Monster, etc.), look for advice from college and university web-sites. Don't just look at one; read a variety of suggestions and choose those that seem right to you.

For suggestions on writing a personal statement, try a web search for something like the following:
       "Graduate School" "personal statement" site:.edu

Some sites to consult include the following (check these out for suggestions on how to approach your recommenders):

  • Graduate school essays (from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)
  • Good advice (from SUNY Buffalo)
  • Words to avoid (from UC Berkeley)
  • More advice (from Phil Agre at UCSD)
  • Suggestions from Yahoo?
