A selection of tools for building your bibliography and performing basic research.
HANDY, EASY, LIMITED
THE UF CATALOG lists print and electronic materials available at UF.
JSTOR: indexes a limited number of excellent journals, all of which are available electronically.
Explore the Advanced feature when you need to limit your search to Art and Art History journals (but note that it often makes sense to perform searches unrestricted by discipline.)
A BIT MORE ADVANCED
BHA: indexes a much larger range of art history journals, some of which are available only in print form (check for these in the library catalog, then go get them on the shelf in the library)
WorldCat (follow link to Databases): going the extra step here to see what you can find from beyond UF on your topic. Items in WorldCat may or may not be at UF (sometimes WorldCat finds things we have at UF, but which don't show up in the UF catalog because of the level of data available . . . this might include a chapter inside of a book). If it's not at UF, consider using Interlibrary Loan, illiad.uflib.ufl.edu/illiad
You can also look at the library catalogs of major research libraries such as
Harvard University ("Hollis") and
Univ. of California system ("Melvyl")
PRIMARY MATERIALS
The Archives of American Art, www.aaa.si.edu collects papers and interviews of American artists. Some of this material is available on-line, some can be requested via
Interlibrary Loan, illiad.uflib.ufl.edu/illiad
PUBLISHED PRIMARY MATERIALS (period magazines and newspapers)
American Periodical Series Online, 1741-1900 (follow link to Databases). Database of select periodicals published in America. All materials available in PDF.
Index to 19th-Century American Art Periodicals (follow link to Databases). Index of art journals published in US. Some articles may be available in digital form. Others will require that you check the library catalogue to see if UF holds a copy.
