Text[1]=["ARH 6696","WEB PAGE FORTHCOMING: The seminar will investigate American art in an international context focusing on Americans in France (although also touching on Italy) in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We'll be considering various dimensions of transatlantic encounters in which American artists, writers, and collectors studied, traveled and lived abroad. In addition to accounting for artistic, cultural, political, and economic motivations for going global and how the experience affected artists' careers, the seminar also will be devoted to understanding the meaning of that experience in shaping American identity at various levels. How did artists come to see themselves as American through the European sojourn? How did they incorporate European-ness into their identities? What was the reception of European and European-ized work in the United States.  Beyond those suggested above, other themes and concerns we will consider include:  the varied experiences of African-American and white artists, and of male and female artists; travel and tourism; discovering museums; the literature (novels and travel writing) of the foreign encounter; the expatriate experience; etc."]
