Welson Tremura (Ph.D, Florida State University) has a joint appointment with the Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Tremura permanently joined the Center for Latin American Studies in 2002 as musician and educator who is well-versed in Brazilian Jazz, classical, and vocal music as well as traditional European classical forms, also specializes in ethnomusicology (folk religion, technology, and interdisciplinary projects) and world music. With a Law Degree from UNERP in Brazil, Dr. Tremura served as a development consultant and director for a major automotive manufacturing company (high precision engine components) and for several years managed and was responsible for setting up an assembly facility in southern Brazil.

Originally from the state of São Paulo, where he studied music and law, he later attended Weber State University in Utah, University of Tennessee where he received his Masters degree and later his PhD in Musicology-ethnomusicology. While in Tennessee, he directed Roane State Community College Concert Choir and Celebration Show Choirs, sang with the First Presbyterian and First Street Methodist Churches of Knoxville, and also performed with the Knoxville Opera Company. Dr. Tremura has participated in several recordings and technology projects with renowed musical artists in Brazil as well as in the United States, and Europe.

Dr. Tremura has performed extensively throughout Brazil, United States, Europe, and New Zealand including the International Double Reed Convention (Rotterdam), Festival de Inverno (Campos do Jordão, Brazil), Nashville Opry Theatre Christmas Concert with Barbara Mandrel (Nashville), and the American Cancer Society Benefit Concert with Bernadette Peters (Tallahassee). He has also performed solo concerts for João Figueiredo and Ernesto Geisel (former Presidents of Brazil) and won second place for his composition with RTC (Rádio e Televisão Cultura).

Dr. Tremura currently teachs courses in Latin America and Brazilian topics, directs world music ensembles, coordinates artist-in-residencies through the Center for World Arts, and is the founder and Director for the Brazilian Music Institute. Dr. Tremura is also an academic advisor and collaborates with several units through the University of Florida, including the School of Theater and Dance, Center for World Arts, Digital Worlds Institute, Partnership in Global Learning, and Academic Technology to create and develop Latin American arts linkages in local, state, national and international arenas that involve performance, research and service to profession.

Teaching Philosophy: " I aim to teach initiative, imagination and persistence in research, critical examination of resources and ideas, and clear, creative writing skills. Since my teaching approach is oriented towards challening students, it seems specially important that I am able to offer guidance, assistance, and encouragement throughout the development of a course. Most students respond positively to challenge, seeing it as a sign of respect, and many find it stimulating. Also, students will take quite a bit of constructive criticism if they believe the teacher is aware of their hard work and supportive of it. Though awareness and understanding of different cultural backgrounds, students can experience and learn to appreciate and love music on many levels."
