Dr. Margaret Butler is an Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Florida. Her research on eighteenth-century Italian opera explores a range of topics including theatrical production practices and administrative models, stylistic fusion and reform, exoticism, and iconography. Her book, Operatic Reform in Turin: Aspects of Production and Stylistic Change in the 1760s (Libreria Musicale Italiana, 2001), was based on research she conducted as a Fulbright Fellow. She is the author of the chapter on Italian Opera in the Cambridge History of Eighteenth-Century Music, and her articles have appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Early Music, Cambridge Opera Journal, Eighteenth-Century Music, and Music in Art: International Journal for Musical Iconography. She has been an invited speaker at conferences in Italy, Spain, Germany, and Belgium, and is currently at work on her second book, on the French artistic and political context for opera in 18th-century Parma. Butler teaches courses on 17th and 18th-century music, methodologies in historical musicology, and American Musical Theatre. She is currently president of the Southern Chapter of the American Musicological Society.
