CHUCK LEVY BIOGRAPHY
Chuck Levy and companyChuck Levy is both an accomplished physician and musician. These seemingly separate interests are joined with Chuck’s involvement in CAHRE where he is an adjunct faculty member and the chairman of the advisory board. If you are in the neighborhood, you can find Chuck playing music in the Shands Hospital Atrium on the 3rd Friday of each month.

In July, 2007, Chuck spent two weeks in Gambia, Africa, studying the akonting with Jola master musicians Remi Diatta, and Ekona Diatta, as well as with noted researcher and performer, Daniel Jatta. The akonting is an African 3-stringed instrument, similar in construction to the banjo, and has recently been recognized as one of the main forerunners of the banjo. To learn more about the akonting and the Jola people that play the akonting, visit www.myspace.com/akonting (highly recommended). This trip was sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
