Arts in Healing with Gainesville's homeless community/2008-2009
IFAH has recently partnered with Citizens for Social Justice in May 2008 on an ongoing project called The Golden Door. Citizens for Social Justice is a non-profit corporation founded and run by UF students with the mission of improving civic engagement and social awareness. The Golden Door project aims to take homeless individuals off the streets and place them in a student-run residential homeless education program that will provide them with educational resources as well as job-placement, health services, tutoring/mentoring opportunities, and housing for one-year. IFAH is working to develop a curriculum of meaningful art activities that will become a part the educational component of the program. Beginning in October 2008, IFAH members will be volunteering once a week in local homeless shelters to gain experience while creating a positive arts-based curriculum that will introduce new ways of expression and self-discovery as a means to foster self-reflection and build self-esteem. IFAH’s art curriculum will be implemented once The Golden Door project begins in September 2009. IFAH members have committed to run and oversee arts mentoring in the residence for as long as The Golden Door is in existence
