Akonting Music and Dance
These videos are mostly of Remi Diatta, Daniel Iatta, Ekona Diatta, and others playing the akonting in various settings. The videos include songs that were taught to me as well as general repertoire. There are a few selections that show Jola men relaxing singing and drinking palm wine, a film of a griot fiddler (not a Jola). All the akonting players use the o’teck attack, which is very similar to the American clawhammer approach to the banjo accept the young man in the files entitled young player. It was explained to me that he was just fooling around. These videos also include an interview with Ekona with Daniel as an interpreter, and a visit to Sagari Sambo, an elder akonting player with Ekona. Sagari didn’t play much, but he and Ekona sang together.

At Mandinary
Shows the sacrifice of a pig to evoke and welcome the spirit of Daniels Father who died in the 1970’s or early 80’s. There is also a video of Jola men chasing out the spirit that has caused an illness in a boy. The boys face is swollen, looking lkke he has the mumps.

Remi Gets his Wheelchair
Remi has limited use of his legs due to polio. The great folks at Top End (a division of Invacare) donated a wheelchair that I was able to deliver to Remi.
