Online Graduate Certificate in Arts in Medicine

The Graduate Certificate in Arts in Medicine recognizes the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to the use of the arts to enhance individual and community health and to impact healthcare environments. The Certificate is designed to enable graduate students and professionals in the arts, health sciences, and other health-related professions to effectively engage the arts to enhance health outcomes in individuals and communities, and to effectively manage arts programs in healthcare and community settings. The Certificate is offered by the College of Fine Arts and administered through the Center for Arts in Medicine.

Student Eligibility:

  • Graduate students in any major may complete the Graduate Certificate in Arts in Medicine.
  • Non-degree seeking students may pursue the Graduate Certificate in Arts in Medicine as long as the applicant has at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.
  • All students (degree seeking, non-degree seeking, or post-baccalaureate) wishing to complete the Certificate must apply and be accepted to the Certificate program.
  • Technical competencies sufficient for online learning including web navigation, word precessing, and blogging.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate program requires a bachelor’s degree in an arts, health, or related field of study, and at least one of the following:

  • Completion of the Introduction to the Arts in Healthcare course at UF with a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Completion of the Arts in Healthcare Summer Intensive program at UF or the University at Buffalo
  • A minimum of one year of professional experience as an artist or administrator in the field of Arts in Medicine
  • Other experience as determined appropriate by the Center's director

Requirements: The Graduate Certificates in Arts in Medicine will be awarded after successful completion of all requirements and will be posted to the academic transcript. Completion of 12 credits of the following coursework with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

  • Creativity and Health: Foundations of the Arts in Medicine (3 credits/8 weeks)
  • Arts in Medicine in Practice (3 credits/8 weeks)
  • Arts in Medicine Graduate Practicum (3 credits/16 weeks)
  • Arts in Medicine Professional Seminar (3 credits/8 weeks)

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the theoretical foundations that inform the field and practice of arts in medicine
  • Understand the roles of the arts in promoting health education, health literacy and disease prevention in community settings
  • Develop understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate care environments and to ensure patient safety
  • Develop professional-level practical skills in using the arts to address health in healthcare and community settings
  • Gain experience in and develop understanding of the administrative structures that support arts in medicine programs
  • Understand core issues, contemporary trends and critical debates central to the arts in medicine
  • Identify core competencies including ethical frameworks, program development and assessment, grant writing, and cultural competency

    The Graduate Certificate in Arts in Public Health recognizes the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to the use of the arts to improve the health of communities. The Certificate is designed to enable graduate students and professionals in public health, the arts, and other health and human services professions to effectively engage the arts to address public health issues by enhancing health literacy and promoting healthy lifestyles. The program will also prepare students and professionals to effectively manage arts programs in community settings. The Certificate is offered by the College of Fine Arts and administered through the Center for Arts in Medicine.
