about the program

Welcome to the University of Florida School of Music Composition Studies website. Our program offers a multitude of creative opportunities for the highly motivated and talented composition student. Composition degrees are available through the Ph.D. and several fellowships and assistantships are available to qualified applicants. Students may focus on acoustic and/or electroacoustic music, working with a core faculty of composers including Drs. Paul Koonce, Paul Richards, and James Paul Sain.

The program boasts two student organizations: a student chapter of the Society of Composers Inc. (UF-SCI) and the Sonic Computing Organization (.SCO). Both organizations are active in presenting concerts and masterclasses, producing annual CDs of student works, and securing travel funding to conferences and festivals. Facilities include the Florida Electroacoustic Music Studio (FEMS) and the Great And Thunderous Octophonic Resonator (GATOR). The curriculum of Music Composition at the University of Florida provides an enriching course of study aimed for each student to further advance the field of composition.
