Research Interests:

Consumer culture, aesthetics, color, installation, phenomenology, painting, painting theory, drawing, time, etc

Research Summary:

Based in the tradition of painting and drawing, my research engages with the essence of their definition--the relationship of substance and support. I strive to expand the viewer’s understanding of this tradition through diverse media ranging from substances such as paint, drywall compound or embroidery floss. For supports I use material such as canvas, paper, wallpaper, gypsum board or baby diapers. My work also explores and frequently exploits the interplay between technologies and the handmade as I follow my inclination to let ideas rather than materials lead my studio work. The subject matter of my creative research is based on a focused examination of the environment around me. I look critically at the ‘stuff’ that fills our space, that arrives in our mailboxes, that is marketed to us in catalogs, and on the web and imagine the metaphysical impact of this visual stuff on our society.
