Hyde’s field of specialization is eighteenth-century French art, with an emphasis on cultural history, gender studies, feminist theory and the history of art criticism. She teaches courses on European art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; gender and the visual arts. Hyde is the author of numerous publications that focus on gender and visual culture. Her book, Making Up the Rococo: François Boucher and his Critics (2006), concerns Boucher and the "femininity" of the rococo style with which he is associated.
