Ground Truth: Evidence of Paris Through Drawing and Digital Media is a selection of work by students enrolled in the School of Art and Art History’s Interdisciplinary Studio course at the Paris Research Centre during May 2007. The landscape of Paris has been the muse for many great artists who found inspiration in its collection of stories, its ability to be a memory of itself, and for its rich, diverse culture. In this course team-taught by Lauren Garber Lake and Katerie Gladdys, students investigated the old and the new city, weaving the past and the present through the physicality of walking, experiencing, and reflecting in the tradition of the flaneaur. Physical engagement with a place through immersion and observation became a catalyst for developing a methodology for knowing and making. Working in the city, students related image data with known artifacts on the ground and interpreted their topographical narratives into artworks using a variety of approaches from both drawing media and digital devices as resources to collect and construct images, objects, and video.

We would like to thank the Paris Research Centre for both their support and for providing a unique and rich learning environment for students at the University of Florida.

UP IN SMOKE – A DYING BREED
Photographs by: Randy Batista

Sept 17th – October 19th 2007
Public Reception: Friday Oct. 12, 2007 7-9 pm
Lecture: Friday Oct. 12, 2007 5-6 pm at Focus Gallery (Lecture by Randy Batista and Dr. Steven B. Pokorny, Assistant Professor from the College of Health and Human Performance, whose research focuses upon tobacco abuse.)

Up in Smoke –is a body of work reflecting both literal and figurative interpretations of the Dying Breed. It is literal, of course, because smoking vastly increases risk of death due to cardiovascular disease (heart attacks, strokes, etc.) and because lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. It is figurative because although the rate of smoking is growing globally, the rate of smoking in developed countries is declining. This is due to education and a dramatic change in attitudes about smoking on the part of an educated population. In the past, smokers were depicted as glamorous, suave, Hollywood heros. Now, through the changes in attitudes, smokers have become outcasts, relegated to smoking in designated areas, at distances, or not at all. The paragon has become the pariah.

The subject of this photo exhibition… smokers and the documentation of issues around smoking… has intrigued me for years. It started a couple of decades ago when my then professor, Jerry Uelsmann, gave us an assignment to photograph “evidence of man.” Over the years when I have noticed “evidence of man” in details related to smoking, I have reminded myself that this is a topic I want to explore and address.

As a young child my Cuban parents smoked Camels. Filterless. Like many others, they quit once the health hazards became apparent but smoking remained a feature of our home life. My spanish grandfather, Yayo, with whom we lived after we left Cuba, was a cigar roller in Ybor City. He, of course, smoked HavaTampa cigars on a daily basis. On Sunday afternoons he hosted get togethers that featured dozens of friends, spaghetti, laughter, smoke, dominoes and orange wine. Yayo died of throat cancer. My Aunt Irene, an intelligent, humorous, force of a woman, smoked like a chimney for most of her adult life. She died of emphysema, hooked to an oxygen tank, still desperate for just one more drag.

My thanks to Dr. Steven B. Pokorny, Assistant Professor, Department of Health Education and Behavior, College of Health and Human Performance at the University of Florida for sharing with me his research in this interdisciplinary collaboration. His recent work has been comparing the effects on behaviors of different smoking policies between UF and Santa Fe Community College.

I would also like to thank the subjects photographed in this exhibit who made the project possible. I appreciate their willingness to allow me into their diminishing personal space.

Mary Tillman MFA Thesis Show
August 13 - September 7, 2007
Reception: August 24, 7-9pm

The ways in which people connect to each other are diverse and complex. They can be as strong as the ties between families, as temporary as acquaintances with co-workers, as quick as a passing glance on the subway, or even as fleeting as the imagined life of the past owner of a used book. New ways to increase human interactions are constantly being invented and utilized by society. Systems of correspondence have shifted how we interact and form communities.

Interest in the use of new technologies as a tool for the development of communities is what prompted the development of this project. It consists of two components that act as a means of making visual and physical the modern structure of the virtual community. The first, Sets & Subsets, is a large, complex artists’ book that uses printmaking to catalogue the artist’s personal involvement in the online social community, MySpace.com. The second, NetWork, is a dynamic installation piece that manifests a virtual community within the physical space of the gallery. Together they examine the possibility of community functioning in both digital and physical spaces. (Mary Tillman)

BETWEEN HISTORY AND MODERNITY:
PLACEMAKING IN THE TEQUILA VALLEY OF MEXICO

January 18th - 24th, 2007

An exhibition of work from Studio Mexico 2006, an architectural design studio sponsored by the Preservation Institute: Caribbean in the School of Architecture at the University of Florida.  Studio Mexico is an on-going program investigating the influence of geography, climate, and culture on place making in historic rural communities. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the practical and symbolic role of water in making place. These issues are tested using design proposals for new forms of public space and small scale public buildings for farming communities in the Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico which was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape.

PHOTOGRAPHING PARIS

Artist: Sergio Vega's class ART 2930
November 15, 2006 - January 15, 2007
Reception: December 1, 2006 7-9 p.m.

This exhibition is a selection of the work produced by students enrolled in the class ART 2930 C “Photographing Paris” in the honors program at the UF Paris Research Center during the spring of 2006. The class was designed to introduce students to the basic techniques of photography using the city of Paris as a playground for experimentation. The themes for discussion were: Nineteenth century and the history of the city in images of melancholy, surrealist photography and the mapping of the unconscious, voyeurism, street photography and the artist as the drifter, postwar humanism and modernist conceptions of photography, realism, symbolism, opticality and abstraction.

With the exception of one, all the students participating have not taken classes in photography before. In addition, only two of those students are enrolled in the School of art and Art History. It is with great pleasure that I put forward a selection of their work to be exhibited at the Focus gallery. I believe the results speak for themselves in their aesthetic and conceptual complexity and are testimony of the extraordinary stimulating and learning experience that the Paris Research Center provides to students at the University of Florida.
