Graphicstudio: Word
& Image
Printmaking
November 20, 2007 - February 1, 2008
Reception: Friday, January 11, 2008

Word and Image is an exhibition curated from the collection of the Collaborative Workshop at the University of South Florida.  The attraction of the verbal and the visual in contemporary art is explored in this small but comprehensive selection of works. In prints, books and sculptures created over the past 30 years at the studio, artists and their collaborators test the capabilities and limits of words and images as partners in vibrant aesthetic dialogues.

These artists revel in wordplay that layers a further level of meaning onto their already distinctive voices, aligning their consonances and dissonances with poets, crafting words into images and images into words, and spinning good tales.  Included in the exhibition are works by Arakawa, Abel Barroso, Waltercio Caldas, Georg Baselitz and Robert Creeley, Abraão Batista, William S. Burroughs and David Bradshaw, Lesley Dill, Beverly Pepper and Jorie Graham, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, Kiki Smith and Parmenides, Pat Steir and John Yau, Keith Sonnier, and John Scott.

Graphicstudio, recognized for its collaborative work with international artists of the highest caliber since 1968, has brought participation in important contemporary art discourse to Florida.  World- renowned artists come to the facility to work with master printers and create limited editions of artworks that are based in the concept of printmaking, but often cross into other media.  For example sculpture is sometimes created in series, or books, etc.

Word and Image is organized by the USF Institute for Research in Art/Graphicstudio and the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, and curated by Peter Foe and Noel Smith.  The exhibition offers an opportunity for viewers to explore verbal language in both narrative and visual modes of inquiry.  The range of artists included in this exhibition is remarkable, and the works speak to an inclusive scope of people in the u niversity environment.

Just Suppose: Photographs by
Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor

September 25th – November 9th 2007
Public reception: Friday, October 12th 7-9 pm

Just Suppose; Photographs by Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor is a two-person show by a husband and wife, each of whom has a significant international reputation.  Jerry Uelsmann changed the place of photography in art history by approaching the manipulation of photo negatives and printing in the darkroom in a completely new way.  Uelsmann came into the art world during a time when purists believed in the “decisive moment,” or setting up and capturing a point in time as the ultimate photographic product.  He creates his work with a collage sensibility.  By combining negatives from many different photographs into composite images he uses pure elements to invent imaginary worlds.  His work is studied and manipulated, in black and white, and usually combines elements of nature with symbolic objects or imagery that invoke humanity in a quiet sense.

38 x 30 in. 2006

Maggie Taylor has recently gained a tremendous following, and like Uelsmann, she has challenged prevailing approaches to her craft.  Her process of layering imagery takes place on a screen instead of in a darkroom.  Her work is created digitally, primarily utilizing a photographic scanner and computer software to create incredibly rich, layered compositions that in many cases appear to be closer to painting than photography.  Her work is in vivid color, and utilizes symbolic objects and imagery that is dreamlike and ethereal.  It is complex, with emotion and tenderness that is unexpected in the commonly flat, graphic world of digital imagery.  She also has used technique to enter a new genre.

Maggie Taylor "Garden" inkjet print, 30 x 30 in. 2005

Although Taylor and Uelsmann have appeared in galleries together, this exhibition presents an in-depth study of both of their work highlighting its similarities.  Because the University Gallery, UF and Gainesville have been home to these two artists for many years, we are privileged to be able to explore their work styles, interest in both ethereal space and unusual objects, and the collecting of source material; more personal information.  The University Gallery is privileged to have host a beloved Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Alumnus in a combined exhibition that is as educationally enlightening as it is aesthetically stimulating.
Please join us for this exciting Event, we will feature music from The Peyton Brothers, live in the University courtyard.

For information about our members private preview that evening sponsored by Emiliano’s Café, and Dorns Liquors and Wine House, please contact the gallery! The public reception will be sponsored by the Swamp Restaurant.

TEN PLUS TEN: REVISITING PATTERN & DECORATION

Artists: Miriam Schapiro, Tony Robbin, Robert R. Zakanitch, Jane Kaufman, Robert Kushner, Joyce Kozloff, Brad Davis, Ned Smyth, Valerie Jaudon, and Kim MacConnel

November 21, 2006 - February 2, 2007
Reception: December 1, 2006 7-9pm

Artist's talk: December 1, 2006 12pm

Ten artists from the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) Movement of the 1970s are featured in this exhibition that explores the roots of an important period in American art. The ten artists will each be represented by a major work from the 1970s or 80s, plus a newer work.

Recently painterly, decorative work has received more positive attention. There is a new appreciation of the handmade, sensual object, and inquiry is now turning to the cognitive effects of pattern and beauty. The exhibition offers a range of style, from geometric shape and hard line to swirling gesture and sensual textures.

Norma and William Roth are Florida collectors who have been great supporters of the P&D artists for decades. Many of the works in this exhibition are borrowed from their collection, as well as the holdings of the Orlando Museum of Art.

Reception: October 13, 2006 7-9pm

, Room 105 (FAB 105)

Jim Roche has had an illustrious career, producing two and three dimensional work, large site-specific outdoor installations, and performance art presented through video.  His work has been included in the Whitney Annual (before it was biannual) in 1976, the Paris Biennale in 1977, and many other international exhibitions. He has done many solo and group exhibitions and major installations throughout his career.

“Sign Times” is a major piece created by Roche in 1991 that has been shown in its entirety in only two other locations.  It is a popular culture statement and also points to environmental issues, advertising and cultural history.  It is a large installation made from authentic road signs that is both nostalgic and graphically powerful.

As a collection, the contemporary art acquired by Miami-based developer Craig Robins defies neat categorization. Combining a cutting edge outlook with unusual range and depth, Robins has selected impressive works by many of the brightest names in contemporary art. But it is immediately clear that this collector is responding in a very personal way to pieces that speak on both emotional and formal levels. Ranging from minimal and serene to politically charged and arousing, the Robins collection covers a spectrum of aesthetic interests.

“Greater than the Sum: Selections from the Craig Robins Collection of Contemporary Art” includes 50 works by 22 artists who display compassion, bravery and skill in their work. Myriad nationalities are represented among the selected artists, and the works share a visual clarity that embraces global society. There is a strong representation of figurative work and much reference to popular culture. In essence, this exhibition is greater than the sum of its parts because the intensity of each artist’s work is manifested in the strength of the collection as a whole, simultaneously reflecting the powerful pace of Craig Robins and his critical impact on the growth of south Florida as a major international art center.

The College of Fine Arts of the University of Florida is extremely fortunate to have this opportunity to present this exhibition of works from an important collection of international contemporary art at the University Gallery.

THE FBI FILES - Paintings/Collages by Arnold Mesches

August 23-October 7, 2005
Opening Reception: Friday, August 26, 7-9 PM

Talk by Arnold Mesches: Friday, September 9, 3 PM

The University Gallery opens its fall, 2005 season with the internationally acclaimed exhibition, “The FBI Files,” paintings and collages by Arnold Mesches. Mesches’ work is informed by his sensitivity to humanity and society. It is representational and expressionistic, addressing issues of democracy, freedom, and civil rights. During the mid 1940’s, Mesches discovered that he was being “shadowed” by special informants working for the F.B.I. In 1999, through the Freedom of Information Act, the artist gained access to his 760-page FBI file. The reports contained major areas of blacked out words and sections.

“The FBI Files,” contains an extensive collection of collages made from copies of the actual pages from Mesches’ files, along with eight large acrylic paintings on canvas. Arnold Mesches’ work, while full of significant narrative content, is as always, painterly, aesthetically compelling, rich in color and form, and graphically poignant. “The FBI Files” has traveled widely throughout the United States. The documentary film, “A Conversation with Arnold Mesches,” about the exhibition and life experiences of the artist, produced by the Artists Network, New York City, is also included in the University Gallery exhibition.

CONCEPTUAL REALISM - Paintings by John O'Connor

April 26- May 27, 2005
Opening reception Apr. 29, 2005, 7-9 PM

My paintings record the history of a journey to explore the mystery of illusion and reality. My goal is to provoke thought about how we create our reality. Humor, paradox, deception, and riddle are aspects of this working process. The result is conceptual realism—not new realism or photo realism.
