Motet Project News

May 10, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for using the Motet Database Catalog Online over the past several years. The Motet Project associates have been working since 2003 to make the data more accurate, efficient, and complete. Very soon, the results of this work will be reflected in the database as we replace this format with a new forty-field format. For most of you, the changes that you see on the page will be slight; many of the changes were needed to more accurately reflect the many records for 15th century motets that we have been adding. Please see the information under the link Data Fields for complete explanations.

The new data set reflects corrections and additions to the old data set. Many of you have very kindly written to point out errors; we are sorry that the corrections could not have been implemented sooner. All new work, including corrections, has been carried out in the new data 40-field data set, and thus not visible to users. Additions for the May 2008 update include some new sources, some complete texts, and editing of source and composer information.

The work continues, and we have several hundred records undergoing final editing; these should be added in late June, 2008, including records for 15th century motets. As always, we welcome your suggestions, corrections, and contributions. In particular, we need good inventories of
single-composer prints and any manuscripts that are either not currently included or for which you have additional information. We also welcome additions to individual fields, particularly complete texts. If you would like to contribute information, we will be happy to acknowledge your contribution in the contributor field and on the web page.

We have many plans for future improvements; please let us know of ideas and suggestions.
Sincerely,

Jennifer Thomas, Motet Project Director and Editor
