Minor in Music Performance
The Minor in Music Performance (Instrumental or Voice) assumes
the student has had a substantial amount
of pervious music study. A Theory Placement Exam is required to determine
the appropriate level of Theory the student should be taking. This Minor
also requires an audition so that the student can be placed in a studio,
and includes the following courses:
- MUT 1121, Music Theory 1 (or MUT 1122),
Music Theory 2, MUT 2126 Music Theory 3, or MUT 2127 Music Theory 4,
depending on where the student begins after taking the THEORY
PLACEMENT EXAM)
- MUL 2010, or MUL 3012, Masterpieces of
Music
- MUN**** ENSEMBLE (Three Semesters of
Ensemble Participation)
- APPLIED MUSIC-2000 LEVEL (Two Semesters)
& 3000 LEVEL (One Semester)
- and appropriate INSTRUMENT SPECIFIC
REQUIREMENTS listed below:
All Instruments Except Woodwinds
choose one from the following for a total of three credits:
- MUL 3xxx or MUL 4xxxx Music Literature
Elective
Woodwind Instruments choose an
additional three credits from the following choices or combination of
choices:
- Applied Music (lessons): MV_32_ (Each
semester of applied lessons is three credits)
- Instrumental Ensembles: MUN 3123, 3133,
3143, 3213 (Each ensemble is one credit per semester)
- Chamber Music: MUN 3460 (Each chamber
music ensemble is one credit per semester)
- Music History and Literature: MUH 3xxx,
MUH 4xxx, MUL 33xx, MUL 43xx, MUL 48xx (Three credits per course)
- Music Theory MUT 3xxx, MUT 4xxx (Three
credits per course)
TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 19
Only THIRTEEN HOURS below the 3000 Level
will count toward this minor. Applied music below the 2000 level may not
be used.

Minor in Music Literature and Theory
A Theory Placement Exam is required to
determine the appropriate level of Theory the student should be taking.
This Minor does not require an Audition, but some music background is
highly desirable. The coursework includes:
- MUT 1121 and MUT 1122, Music Theory 1
and 2 (or MUT 2126 Music Theory 3 or MUT 2127 Music Theory 4,
depending on where the student begins after taking the THEORY
PLACEMENT EXAM.)
- MUL 2110, Musical Styles (eff. Spring
2002), or MUL 3012, Masterworks of Music
- MUH 3211 and MUH 3212, History of Music
1 and 2
- MUL **** ONE MUSIC LITERATURE ELECTIVE
(3000 LEVEL or above)
TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 17
Only NINE HOURS below the 3000 level will
count toward this minor.
[COMPOSITION OPTION--If a student is
interested in composition, he/she can add MUC 1211 and MUC 1212,
Composition Skills 1 and 2 to bring a composition component to this minor.
This will bring the total hours required to 19]

The Minor in Ethnomusicology does not
require an audition, but a background in music is desirable. A Theory
Placement Exam is required to determine the appropriate level of Theory
the student should be taking. In addition to the courses listed below,
participation in one or more of the School of Music’s Ensembles is
recommended. The coursework includes:
- MUT 1121 and MUT 1122, Music Theory 1
and 2 (or MUT 2126 Music Theory 3 or MUT 2127 Music Theory 4,
depending on where the student begins after taking the THEORY
PLACEMENT EXAM)
- MUH 2501, Introduction to World Musics
- MUH 2530, Popular and Traditional Music
of Africa
- MUH 3541, Latin American Music
- MUS 4905, INDIVIDUAL PROJECT IN
ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 18
Only TWELVE HOURS below the 3000 level will
count toward this minor.

- ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE THEORY PLACEMENT EXAM BEFORE BEGINNING
THEIR MINOR. IF THEY DID NOT TAKE ONE DURING THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED
AUDITION DAYS, THEY SHOULD CONTACT THE MUSIC ADMISSIONS OFFICE TO FOR
THE DATE OF THE NEXT EXAM.
- A TOTAL OF 12 OF THE HOURS MUST BE COMPLETED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
FLORIDA .
- ALL COURSES MUST BE COMPLETED WITH A "C" OR BETTER (NO
S/U).
- COURSES WITH A 4905 NUMBER WILL NOT APPLY TO THE MINORS IN MUSIC
PERFORMANCE AND MUSIC LITERATURE AND THEORY.
- THE STUDENT MUST SEE THE UNDERGRADUATE ADVISOR IN THE SCHOOL OF
MUSIC BEFORE ENROLLING FOR COURSEWORK.
- THE STUDENT MUST FILL OUT THE "APPLICATION FOR OPTIONAL
MINOR" WITH THE UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR AFTER BEING
ACCEPTED INTO HIS OR HER COLLEGE.
- THE STUDENT MUST MAKE APPLICATION FOR THE MINOR IN 101 FINE ARTS
BUILDING A (DEAN’S OFFICE).
