Clarinetist
Karl Leister was born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. His first
lessons were with his father, who was a clarinetist with the
RIAS Symphonic Orchestra. From 1953-1956 he studied at the
Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.
In 1957, at the age of 19, he was appointed solo
clarinet of the Berlin Comic Opera.
In 1959, Maestro Herbert von Karajan appointed Leister
principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic.
During his 35-year tenure in Berlin, he also performed
regularly as an international soloist and chamber musician,
collaborating with many of the leading musicians and
conductors of our time. His
solo and orchestral discographies are both extensive and
comprehensive, and can be heard on the DGG, EMI, Philips,
Teldec, Orfeo, Nimbus, and Sony labels. Mr. Leister retired from the Berlin Philharmonic in 1993 to
devote his time to solo performing around the world and
teaching at the Royal Academy of Music London and the
Hochschule für Musik "Hanns
Eisler".
