biography
Dr. Kristen Smith Stoner, an active flutist and teacher, has performed across the United States, in South America, and in Europe. She received her B.A. in Music from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.M. and D.M.A. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She studied flute with Karl Kraber, Bradley Garner, Jacqueline Hofto, and William Montgomery. She performed at the National Flute Association Conventions in Atlanta (1999), Dallas (2001), and Washington, D.C. (2002). She has performed in prestigious competitions around the country, including the NFA's Young Artist Competition, the Flute Talk Magazine Competition in Chicago, and the Myrna Brown Competition in Dallas. She has also performed with the Opera Theatre of Lucca in Italy, the Lancaster Festival Orchestra, and the Victoria Bach Festival.

Intrigued by Latin American flute music, Dr. Stoner has done research on the flute music of Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. Her doctoral thesis on flute music of Brazil won the National Flute Association Thesis and Dissertation Competition in 2002. She traveled to Argentina and Chile in 2001 to study and collect unpublished flute compositions. In the summer of 2003, she was invited to return to Chile, to perform and give masterclasses at the Conservatorio Nacional in Santiago and at the Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso.

Dr. Stoner also maintains research interests in flute music by women composers. She performed at the Sixth International Festival of Women Composers in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 2001, gave a lecture-recital at the National Flute Association Convention in Dallas, Texas in 2001, and performed at the 7th International Festival of Women Composers in Gainesville in 2003. In 2002, she was invited to the University of Texas to perform a Guest Faculty Artist Recital with a focus on music by women composers.
