Century TowerMusicology and Ethnomusicology

Musicology at the University of Florida integrates the historical, cultural, and theoretical analyses of music from throughout the world with interdisciplinary approaches that seek to understand music from multiple perspectives. The program nurtures an environment of collaborative research, teaching, and creative work among students and faculty and takes advantage of the University of Florida’s outstanding interdisciplinary strengths in African, Latin American, European, and Gender Studies as well as the Digital Worlds Institute. Courses and seminars in historical musicology and ethnomusicology provide rigorous theoretical and practical training for our students. Graduate students work closely with faculty mentors in research and teaching. In addition, faculty members are actively involved in musical performance and special opportunities exist for integrating performance, scholarship, and community involvement through our programs.

Musicology is also linked to UF’s Center for World Arts and World Music Ensembles, which provide opportunities for students to work directly with artists-in-residence from around the world in rehearsals, private instruction, performances, and outreach activities into the community.
