I. Applied Lessons
All applied students will turn in a copy of their schedule prior to the beginning of each semester. This schedule should include student preferences for lesson times. Every effort will be made to honor these preferences, but scheduling concerns may preclude these choices. Lessons will begin as soon as possible each semester.
Please come to each lesson prepared to perform well. Regular practice is expected of all applied students, with the semester grade reflecting this preparation. The jury grade will also play a major part in the determination of the final grade for music majors and minors. All applied students are expected to perform regularly for studio class, with majors and minors also performing for area recital and convocation as possible. Students should strive for proficiency in all areas, including snare, keyboard, timpani, multiple percussion, and drum set.
Make up lessons will be scheduled only when the student informs the instructor of a valid reason prior to the lessons time. Unexcused absences will affect the final grade.
Due to limited space, students must sign up for practice room times. This will be done during the second week of classes. If the student is not present within ten minutes of the reserved time, the room becomes available on a “first come, first served” basis. Keys will be issued at the beginning of the semester. Keep all practice rooms locked when not in use.
All applied students will participate in major ensembles. Placement auditions will be held at the beginning of Fall Semester and at the end of Fall Semester (for Spring placement). All majors will participate in orchestra for at least one semester. Percussion majors are expected to participate in percussion ensemble and steel drum band as possible. Other ensemble options included Jazz Band, Jacare Brazil, and Agbedidi Dance and Drumming Ensemble. Auditions for these ensembles vary by semester.
Students should arrive early for rehearsals to assist in setting up, and are expected to return equipment to its proper place at the end of each rehearsal.
In addition to equipment, mallets, etc. provided by the University, students are expected to provide sticks and mallets of their own as needed. Band Central Station offers discounts to UF students. In addition, the following mail order companies offer a wide selection: Lone Star Percussion – (214) 340-0835, and Steve Weiss Music – (215) 659-0100. The minimum equipment needed by incoming students is as follows: 1 pair concert snare sticks, 1 pair drum set sticks (brushes as needed), 1 set of 4 medium yarn mallets, 1 pair xylophone mallets, 1 pair bell mallets, 1 pair general purpose timpani mallets, stick bag or case. As students progress, they will need to purchase additional equipment such as multiple sets of marimba and timpani mallets, triangle and beater, tambourine, etc.
The cage must remain locked at all times. This includes the time during rehearsal (after the set up is complete). Please help in the care and maintenance of equipment. Please cover all instruments as possible, and do not place the covers on the floor when they are not in use.
Section leaders will be assigned for large ensembles. These individuals will be responsible for music and equipment for the section. The section leader will inform Dr. Broadway about equipment needs for concerts, tour, etc. Communication must be maintained to insure that equipment will be present for all rehearsals. Students will be assigned parts based on ability level, but all players will rotate through a variety of instruments during the course of the school year. Please remember that these ensembles serve as a learning experience in addition to functioning as performing groups.
