Documentary Produced by UF Fine Arts Professor Makes American Broadcast Premiere
"NORA," a swiftly moving poem of sound and image on made its American television premier on January 19, 2011. The film produced by University of Florida Fine Arts faculty member and Center for World Arts Director Joan Frosch, and directed by David Hinton and Alla Kovgan, tells a story of choreographer Nora Chipaumire growing up in Zimbabwe during the second Chimurenga.
“Nora” is based on true stories of the dancer Nora Chipaumire, who was born in Zimbabwe in 1965. In the film, Nora returns to the landscape of her childhood and takes a journey through some vivid memories of her youth. Using performance and dance, she brings her history to life in a swiftly-moving poem of sound and image. The result is a film about family dramas, difficult love affairs and militant politics, which moves back and forth between the comic and the tragic, the joyful and the mournful. It is a film about a girl who is constantly embattled - struggling against all kinds of intimidation and violence - but who slowly gathers strength, pride and independence. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa, “Nora” includes a multitude of local performers and dancers of all ages, from young schoolchildren to ancient grandmothers, and much of the music is specially composed by a legend of Zimbabwean music - Thomas Mapfumo.
NORA" was broadcasted by 119 PBS affiliates from New York to Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. ET and mid-night, including WUFT-TV/DT: Channel 5.3 / Cox Cable 114 in Gainesville and WJCT Channel 7.3 / World Comcast 211 in Jacksonville, on the PBS World TV program Afropop: The Ultimate Exchange "125 Franco's Blvd." & "NORA."
This latest film project of the University of Florida Center for World Arts received an inaugural DANCE MOViES commission for the opening of EMPAC, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and was created in cooperation with the Center for African Studies, with additional support from the Fine Arts Scholarship Enhancement Fund and CAPTURE. "NORA" has been officially selected for over 100 international film festivals and was recently awarded the prestigious IMZ Gran Prix.
