Dinner, Dancing, and Music Will Highlight 'An Evening of Music with Friends'

2012 Friends of Music benefit, designed by Keith Watson, will feature student and faculty performers, and special guest Gary Langford

The University of Florida Friends of Music are joining forces once again with acclaimed event designer Keith Watson, but this time they are premiering a new benefit event: "An Evening of Music with Friends." The elegant event will offer non-stop music entertainment, dinner, full bar, and dancing in the Steinbrenner Band Hall on UF campus. The entertainment, ranging from operatic vocal performances to jazz and dance music ensembles, will feature students and faculty of the University of Florida School of Music (College of Fine Arts). As a special treat, guest performer and emeritus faculty Gary Langford will also highlight the robust slate of entertainment.

Ensembles featured at the 2012 event include:
• UF Jazz Combo
• UF Opera Theatre
• Pazeni Sauti Africa Choir
• UF Piano Studios
• Welson Tremura, Brazilian Guitarist
• Faculty Dance Band
• Gary Langford and friends
• and more!

The Friends of Music trace their history to 1974, when they first formed in support of the School of Music students and programs. Funds raised each year through special events and membership drives support over 35 scholarships established for students in the school and programming needs for concerts and productions, masterclasses, travel, and enhancements. And the School of Music, indeed, has some exciting programming on the horizon, including: Opera performances of Die Fledermaus in spring 2012; an invited performance by the Fightin' Gator Marching Band in the 2012 summer Olympics in London; a slate of study programs abroad including the inaugural UF administration of Opera Festival di Roma in Rome, Italy; the UF Musicology Colloquium that brings music historians and scholars to campus for public lectures; the 2012 University of Florida International Piano Festival in Gainesville (affiliated with the Chinese-American International Piano Institute); the "Arts at the Whitney" public performance series at UF's Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience in Saint Augustine; and more.

Guest performer Gary Langford retired from the School of Music in 2007 after more than 25 years of teaching and directing UF marching, concert and jazz bands. He has also been a featured artist of the Gainesville Friends of Jazz and directed the Alachua County Youth Orchestra.

"An Evening of Music with Friends" will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets cost $100 and include dinner, dancing, open bar, and entertainment. Table reservation packages and sponsorships are available. All proceeds benefit the UF School of Music (College of Fine Arts) through the UF Friends of Music, a group of patrons, supporters and “friends” of music education at the University of Florida.
