2012-13 School of Theatre + Dance Performance Season

The University of Florida School of Theatre + Dance is excited to announce its 2012-2013 performance season. This diverse selection of performances under the direction of world-class faculty makes for an unforgettable season that cannot be missed.

Measure for Measure

Nadine McGuire Black Box

This 16th-century Shakespearean comedy has been re-envisioned in the “Mad Men” era of the early 1960s. The story of cruel Angelo, gentle Isabella, and doomed Claudio plays out on the canvas of the sexual revolution, political rebellion, and artistic ferment of that decade when the “hidden persuaders” of advertising became the ubiquitous symbols of a rampant consumer culture.
 
Urinetown

Broadway smash Urinetown is a wicked satire of municipal corruption and corporate greed set in a (perhaps not so distant) time when severe droughts have limited water supply and the authorities have made flushing a luxury. With bouncy music, romantic entanglements, and sarcastic lyrics, “urine” for a new perspective on love, loss, and Politics with a capital “pee.”
 
Ajax in Iraq

This contemporary drama parallels the stories of two war figures, Ajax, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, and A.J., a young female soldier in Iraq. The play spotlights the harsh judgment, ridicule, and abuse that women face in the United States Army, along with the distinct fear and danger that military men and women face every day. The cast of Ajax in Iraq will undergo basic military training, to enhance the integrity of this wartime drama.
 
Fall BFA Dance Showcase

McGuire Pavilion Studio G-6, $9.
This annual Fall Showcase features the highly creative and original choreography by our senior BFA dance majors, as well as new and repertory works by guest artists and UF dance faculty. We offer a variety of programs during the show’s four-day run in our studio theatre within the McGuire Pavilion, so be sure to pay attention to the advertised times and the various programs. Audiences have come to recognize this showcase as the nexus for cutting-edge artistry for artists on the verge of the new and the wonderful.

A Servant to Two Masters

This timeless comedy by Carlo Goldoni, directed by Judith Williams, is a farcical masterpiece with its roots in the slapstick commedia dell’ arte. The plight of poor Truffaldino, who is determined that he can serve two demanding masters and yet woo lovely Smeraldina, still manages to delight audiences today.

Blood Wedding

This explosive tragedy of passion set in rural Spain poetically portrays two past lovers and the depth of their feelings toward each other. For decades, audiences have been captivated by the fiery intensity of the play’s dramatic central love triangle and by the vivid imagery summoned through Lorca’s poetic language.

Always new and always edgy, this showcase offers our student choreographers, guest artists, the amazing Dance For Life program, community choreographers and guest performers a delightful opportunity to present works of dance/theatre to the public. Senior BFA dance majors have the opportunity to present solos by guest artists as they prepare for the next stages of their dance careers post-graduation. Be sure to catch the innovative compositions by senior BFA dance majors and delight in the new and exciting world of emerging professional artists.
