2014 Creativity in the Arts and Sciences Event (CASE) Winners Announced

The University of Florida (UF) Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science for Life Program and UF’s College of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Creativity in the Arts and Sciences Event (CASE). Held February 1, 2014, CASE brought together more than 125 students with backgrounds in the sciences and arts to rethink the boundaries of creativity.

Now in its eighth year, the CASE features science research posters, 2-D/3-D art exhibits, film, and dance/music/theatre performances. Students from eight UF colleges and approximately 50 different departments and disciplinary programs as well as students from EMBRY-Riddle Aeronautical University, Emory University and Louisiana State University competed this year for prizes in three categories: science, art or science/art collaboration. Here are our 2014 winners:

 Collaboration winners:

  • 1st place ($1,250): Katie Bosley, UF School of Art and Art History, and Weier Liu, UF College of Medicine, for CIPN Symptom Cups
  • 1st place ($1,250): Katelyn Carty, UF School of Music, and Robin Yoon, UF College of Medicine, for Melody and Malady: An Aural Presentation of Pompe Disease
  • 2nd place ($750): Stepfanie Lam, UF College of Medicine, and Virginia Lane, UF School of Music, for Genetics Meets Music
  • 2nd place ($750): Michelle Couret, UF College of Medicine, and David Tonnelier, UF School of Art and Art History, for Neural Network
  • 3rd place ($500): Billy Schap, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Zac Thompson, UF School of Art and Art History, for Uncertain Space
  • 3rd place ($500): Katherine Green, UF School of Art and Art History, and Andrew Kolarich, UF College of Medicine, for Lucid Degeneration

 Arts (Visual/Performing) winners:

  • 1st place ($1,250): Shelby Sullivan, UF School of Theatre and Dance, for To blow out a candle, or kindle the fire
  • 1st place ($1,250): Vassiliki Daskalakis, UF School of Art and Art History, for A Cigarette A Day
  • 2nd place ($750): Stefanie Anarumo, UF School of Theatre and Dance, for Organized Chaos: The Search for Arcadia
  • 2nd place ($750): Jennifer Squires, UF School of Theatre and Dance, for Lymphedance
  • 3rd place ($500): Kyle Mosler, UF School of Theatre and Dance, for Pack
  • 3rd place ($500): Alexa Udermann, UF School of Art and Art History, for Other Spaces

 Science winners:

  • 1st place ($1,250): Madeleine Turcotte, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for Studying the Breakdown and Rebuilding of the Cell’s Skeleton
  • 1st place ($1,250): Zachary Fitzpatrick, LSU College of Science, for Pushing the Boundaries of Gene Therapy Using Enveloped AAV Vectors
  • 2nd place ($750): Juan Serrano, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for Synthesis and Antimalarial Activities of a Diverse Set of Triazole-Containing Quinine Analogues 
  • 2nd place ($750): Jacob Renuart , UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for Long-Range Electron Transfer in Oxalate Decarboxylase – Hypothetical Enzymatic Mechanism 
  • 3rd place ($250): Benedetto DiCiaccio, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for Photomediated Growth and Characterization of Plasmonic Nonomaterials
  • 3rd place ($250): Shelby Pursley, LSU Department of Chemical Engineering and LSU Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, for Cryoprotectant Loading in a Microchannel
  • 3rd place ($250): Clayton Cozzan, UF College of Engineering, for Non-Invasive Early Detection of Pulmonary Diseases Using Porous Silicon Nanoparticles
  • 3rd place ($250): Alexis Boulter, UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for Interaction of Alu Polymorphisms with Hypertension within the Context of Racism and Social Inequity in African-Americans

This year’s winners will be recognized at the UF-HHMI Science for Life Annual Receptionon April 7, 2014 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the UF President’s House in Gainesville, Fla.
