Dear Parents,

Just over a year ago I joined the College of Fine Arts. I was drawn to this College by the amazing vitality of the students and the high caliber and creativity of the faculty, identifying it as one of the nation’s premier College of Fine Arts. Awards, scholarships, and fellowships received by both our faculty and students all attest to the excellence of the College. I am sure this excellence drew your attention to the College and the School of Music, and ultimately brought your child here too.

Recently, Dr. Madelyn Lockhart, former UF Dean of the Graduate School and Professor Emeritus of Economics, visited and toured the College. During her visit, she remarked upon how an arts education is very equipment-intensive. It requires instruments for our musicians in the School of Music; kilns, photographic equipment, pottery wheels, and more for students in our School of Art and Art History; and lighting, set designs, and sewing machines for the School of Theater and Dance students. In all of these disciplines, computer applications are being used increasingly in every aspect of the arts, from music composition to digital graphics, from set design to dance, as well as in a host of interdisciplinary initiatives.

Moved by the dedication of the students she saw and the quality of instruction they were receiving, Dr. Lockhart has generously offered her assistance in maintaining the College’s equipment. She wants to make sure that the environment for our students will allow them to take full advantage of the incredible education offered by the College of Fine Arts.

Mrs. Lockhart has offered to match donations we receive from parents by January 1st for the renewal and upgrading of equipment in the College of Fine Arts. I am asking you to join Dr. Lockhart in her commitment to continuing the excellence of the education offered by the College by making a gift along with her.

Another option for giving to the College of Fine Arts is establishing a scholarship or endowment in your family’s name to be used for the specific purpose you desire. Of course, gifts of any size will contribute toward these goals, and all gifts will help us to maintain the highest quality of education for which the College has come to be known. For more information regarding these and other possibilities, please contact Maria Gutierrez-Martin, Director of Development for the College of Fine Arts, at mmartin@arts.ufl.edu or 352-846-1211.

Names of donors will receive special recognition in the annual College publication Muse and at the College website on the Parents for the Arts webpage. Donations to the College are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and may be made online at http://www.uff.ufl.edu/OnlineGiving/FineArts/

Thank you for joining us in this campaign. Below is a listing by school of their needs that your contribution could help towards.

Sincerely,
Lucinda Lavelli
Dean, College of Fine Arts
