Among its expanding repertoire of activities, International Piano Seminars, Inc. presents the Prague International Piano Masterclasses, now in its 11th year. This high-level 12-day piano festival was begun by Steinway artist Boaz Sharon, head of the piano area at the University of Florida School of Music, and annually features more than 45 young participants who represent some of the world’s leading conservatories and universities. The distinguished artist faculty come from Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, Argentina, the United States and Israel. Participants receive a series of private lessons and also appear in daily public masterclasses and evening recitals in the Baroque concert hall of Prague’s Jan Deyl Conservatory. A highlight of the festival is the presentation of a concert at the Villa Bertramka, a prestigious recital venue where Mozart often stayed when he visited Prague and where he completed the opera “Don Giovanni.” Sharon continues to serve as the event’s artistic director, assisted by co-founder and festival director Kathryn Reed.
International Piano Seminars Inc. is currently developing new projects in Russia and in China. It also provides scholarships to deserving young performers who otherwise would not be able to participate in its events.
In 2006, International Piano Seminars Inc. received a donation of a 9-foot Baldwin concert grand piano that was placed at the University of Florida’s Keene Center for use during the annual Steinway Festival by visiting artists and University of Florida piano faculty and students. The piano was the generous gift of Fredric G. Levin of Pensacola, Florida. Other donations were made by Dr. Robert Thoburn, of Gainesville, Florida, and by Dr. Tom Andrus, of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Contributions, monetary or otherwise, are welcome and are tax-deductible. To learn more about how your gift can help nurture the gift of music for many talented young artists, please contact Boaz Sharon, president of International Piano Seminars Inc., at 2140 N.W. 7th Lane, Gainesville, FL 32603 or call 352-374 -9760 or e-mail bsharon7@ufl.edu.
