At the University of Florida, we are educating some of the most gifted and academically capable art, design, art history, art education and museum studies students for positions of leadership in their professions. We look forward to considering your application and invite your questions as you complete the admissions process.
Each spring we admit students to begin graduate study for the following fall term. Admission decisions are made mid-March and interested students are invited to visit campus anytime during the fall and spring semesters. The University of Florida offers daily campus tours, which may complement your school visit. The school also hosts Art Bash, a yearly open house event, which takes place on Friday, October 18, 2013 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in various buildings within the School of Art & Art History. The event showcases the breadth of the school’s disciplines to the community. Spring and summer admission is extremely rare, and when approved, often occurs without funding consideration. If you are interested in beginning graduate studies in a term other than fall, please contact the Program Assistant to discuss your situation prior to initiating the application process.
Prospective students are urged to apply for admission as early as possible, but no sooner than a year before the term you plan to enroll, and to utilize the on-line application.

Graduate Assistantships are determined at the same time admission decisions are made. Indicate your interest by checking the assistantship box on your application, and highlight in your letter of intent your qualifications, including details about such things as employment experience, teaching experience, laboratory experience, research, writing, artistic creation, foreign languages, travel and other relevant skills. Also provide a brief description of your plans after completing your graduate education.
APPLICATION PROCESS
There are many steps that must be followed to complete your application. These steps include applying online; requesting official transcripts and letters of recommendation; a letter of intent and a resume; submitting an academic writing sample; taking the GRE and/or English language assessment exams, and reporting the scores. Faculty view applications holistically and compare with other applications to determine the most successful matches for our programs.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Applicants may electronically request THREE (3) letters of recommendation as part of the online application. You will need to allow time for the recommender to receive and respond to your request before the deadline, so complete your application early. You are encouraged to use this process, as your requests are processed automatically after you submit the application. A secure email link will be sent to each person; however, you may want to alert your recommenders to check SPAM boxes, or add ufl.edu to their “safe” email list to be sure this is not overlooked. You will be able to monitor the completion of your letters of recommendation online.
LETTER OF INTENT
The University of Florida online application includes a section for you to write a statement of purpose to express your interest in pursuing our graduate program and provides the opportunity for you to highlight special talents and skills that you will bring to the program. We recommend you prepare this text, carefully review, and then cut and paste into the online application.
GRE (Graduate Record Exam)
Students applying to the master’s program in Art Education with an earned U.S. bachelor’s degree are exempt from the University of Florida GRE requirement.
If your degree was earned outside the U.S., please review the additional details below.
TRANSCRIPTS
Please request that official transcripts from all institutions attended are sent to the Office of Admissions AND to the School of Art + Art History (a minimum grade point average of B (3.0) is required for all upper-division undergraduate work -- usually the last two years of the undergraduate program). However, if the GPA is below a 3.0, conditional admission may be granted in those rare cases where the GPA in the student's major coursework is above a 3.0, or work experience in the field and letters of recommendation warrant an exception.

PORTFOLIO
Submit a digital portfolio of up to 10 professional quality images (jpg) as well as an example of your academic writing, and your resume to the UF SlideRoom portal. There is a $10 submission fee that you pay online after you set up and review your portfolio.
Images and videos can be labeled and ordered after they are uploaded. Include the title of the work, medium, size and date. You may also include the URL for your website.
Maximum file sizes:
images: .jpg, .png or .gif – 2 MB each. For good image quality and fast upload, your image files should be sized no larger than 1280 x 1280 px @ 72 dpi.
video - .mov, .wmv, .flv – up to 20 MB;
PDF - 10 MB per document.
ACADEMIC WRITING SAMPLE
Please submit a research paper, article, curriculum plan or other sample of academic writing. Applicants who are lacking “academic” papers may submit two writing samples, one from each of the following categories:
Category A:
1. Write a one-page artist statement OR
2. Write a one-page teaching philosophy statement
and,
Category B:
1. Given the current fiscal constraints facing public schools, art education programs often face cutbacks or elimination. Provide a convincing argument for art education in the general school curriculum, even in times of tight budgets. OR
2. Describe your personal history of art education and how your past art experiences and teachers have helped to shape your ideas and beliefs about art and your role as an art educator today.
RESUME
A personal resume/CV highlighting previous work and academic experiences as well as awards and achievements is used to determine appropriate assistantship assignments.

Additional Admissions Information for our Applicants with International Bachelor's Degrees (only)
1. Submit certified academic transcripts, including degree statements for all university-level work. These documents must be accompanied by certified English translations. Consideration of an application cannot be given until the Office of Admissions receives ALL required credentials. There is no need to have your document evaluated by a credentialing agency, as that task is completed at the University of Florida
2. The GRE is an admissions requirement for students who have earned a non-US bachelor's degree. The university does not compute grade point averages for non-US earned bachelor’s degrees, and requires the GRE as a component of admissions. Test scores are considered as one part of the entire application. The minimum score for the verbal section is 140 (320 for the pre-Fall 2011 version of the exam). The University of Florida code is 5812 and the department code is 2399.
3. The University of Florida requires proficiency in spoken and written English. This helps ensure that students who speak English as a second language are able to participate fully in university life, both in and out of class. Students from non-English speaking nations, who have not studied at least one year at a U.S. college or university, are also required to submit satisfactory scores on one of the following assessment exams:

If you have completed one academic year of college course work at a university or college in a country where English is the official language, excluding intensive English language programs, you are exempt from this requirement.
The UF Academic Spoken English Programprovides courses designed to improve your English-language speaking and comprehension skills. You may choose to take one of its courses if you do not feel confident about your skills in these areas. You also may be required to take one of its courses if the UF Graduate School or the department you are majoring in does not feel your skills are strong enough for competitive performance in the classroom or research arena. This program also monitors non-US students' SPEAK or TSE scores, which are required and must meet a certain minimum if they are going to be awarded a graduate teaching assistantship.
The UF English Language Institute (ELI)offers non-degree-credit intensive programs for non-US students and professionals who want to improve their ability to speak, read and write English and become more familiar with American life and culture, so they can become more comfortable and successful in real-life settings in education and business. It also provides housing assistance, academic advisement and other services.
