College of Fine Arts Outreach
The College of Fine Arts is committed to making a long-lasting impact on its students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities through exciting outreach programs and service activities. With innovation, generosity of spirit and a genuine love for the arts, College of Fine Arts students, faculty and staff act as arts ambassadors within and beyond the local community.
The College of Fine Arts recognizes that the arts have the ability to enhance the quality of life and continues to build lasting connections and relationships with the community. One of the primary ways the College of Fine Arts serves the community is through the more that 100 concerts, plays, art openings, band performances and events it presents each year.
The College of Fine Arts offers substantial general education and service courses to arts and non-arts majors. In addition to providing arts courses for students enrolled at this institution, the College of Fine Arts maintains strong, dedicated programs in pre-service and in-service arts education, and pursues cooperative research and development endeavors in a variety of activities and disciplines with other colleges and public schools. SCHOOL OF ART + ART HISTORY
Every year, students and faculty from the school help to raise money for the hungry by participating in a national program called Empty Bowls. Students help the public make ceramic bowls which are then filled with soup and sold as part of a fundraiser. The downtown fall arts festival has a fun stop for kids due to SA+AH students who provide an arts booth with face painting and other activities.
JumpstART
In spring 2009, the School of Art + Art History offered a professional development workshop for students and community artists in collaboration with the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, College of Business, titled JumpstART. The workshop armed a diverse community of visual and performing artists in the Gainesville area with the business planning, marketing and fundraising skills. Participants were given an introduction to entrepreneurial topics through experiential activities.
University Galleries Program
The University Galleries Program is the college’s permanent outreach arm. In fall 2008, the exhibit “Roar of the Crowd” exemplified community outreach while collaborating with UF Athletics to bring a multi-media exhibit featuring artist elements of athletics. The School’s newly formed Advisory Board will help enhance outreach in the future as its members are well-known community advocates.
SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Performances, Master classes, Workshops and Lectures
The School of Music reaches out into the community and state through numerous avenues including public performances on- and off- campus. The Music faculty offers master classes, workshops, lectures, etc. in K-12 schools, to professional organizations, at conferences and at summer festivals here in the state and throughout the United States.
Summer Camps
Summer camps including band, piano and string bass offer junior high and high school students from throughout the state opportunities to engage their creative talents.
University of Florida Opera Outreach
The University of Florida Opera Outreach (UFOO) is an extension of the Opera Theatre. Presenting educational programs and promoting upcoming main stage events, this small group of select singers performs opera workshop scenes and one-act operas throughout the region for schoolchildren and adults alike.
SCHOOL OF THEATRE & DANCE
Special Matinees
Each year, the School of Theatre and Dance (SoTD) invites young students from Alachua County schools to attend special matinees of the age-appropriate plays that make up the school’s mainstage season, exposing young people to life-changing theatrical experiences they might not otherwise have. The plays in the school’s yearly season reach thousands of audience members in Alachua County.
Special Tours
Each semester SoTD conducts special tours of its theaters and studios for Hoggetowne Middle School students studying the arts and theater.
Master classes
SoTD regularly conducts master classes in dance throughout the state of Florida and collaborates with Santa Fe College to host students from the entire state in the Florida High School Dance Festival at UF.
The First Coast Arts Festival
SoTD is embarking on a new and high profile initiative, Florida’s First Coast Arts Festival, based in St. Augustine and scheduled to begin in May 2009. The annual festival brings the highest quality artistic performances to Duval County, attracting diverse visitors from throughout the state, the region, and beyond.
CENTER FOR THE ARTS IN HEALTHCARE RESEARCH & EDUCATION
AIM for Africa
One of the CAHRE’s primary outreach programs is AIM for Africa, which includes Arts in Healthcare service learning, study abroad, and cultural exchange programs in three African nations.
International Fine Arts for Healing
A second outlet for outreach is the College of Fine Arts’ International Fine Arts for Healing (IFAH) student organization projects which include weekly arts programs in the Shands Cancer Center Chemotherapy Infusion Center, weekly arts services at the Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Center and for area homeless people; and mural painting projects at the VA Medical Center and the Gainesville Child Advocacy Center.
CENTER FOR WORLD ARTS
Center for World Arts collaborates with other UF entities to enhance their outreach efforts with world cultures and critical diversity perspectives in the arts. CWA regularly conducts outreach events and programs in dance, music and performance for the City of Gainesville, Santa Fe College and multiple K-12 schools throughout the state of Florida.
Mohamed DaCosta, lecturer in African Performing Arts, currently facilitates a weekly African dance and music program at Duval Elementary School, where the Center for World Arts has had a presence since 1997. CWA also participates in creating sustainability structures for global arts such as the Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium, recently funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; and supports the research, documentation, dissemination, and artistic interpretation of global forms through film and live performance for broad audiences throughout Florida, nationally and internationally.
DIGITAL WORLDS INSTITUTE
The Digital Worlds Institute continues to advance its outreach initiatives in adding the traditional and digital ARTS to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas of elementary education with its recent STEAM Project. With funding from both the Smallwood Foundation and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Digital Worlds Institute has partnered with the Lastinger Center for Learning and Duval Elementary School to place artists at Duval during this academic school year. Additionally, DW is currently designing and building a new 21st Century classroom at Duval where visualization and network-based technologies will be used to empower deeper learning in the combined STEAM areas.

CFA faculty and staff donations to the UFCC comprised 7 percent of the university total for 2008 giving.
