The Master of Music in Music Education

The Master of Music in Music Education degree provides in-depth study of music education at the graduate level. Approved by NASM, this degree program has practicing teachers expand their knowledge of music and music education. The courses are taught by an internationally renowned music education faculty, Dr. Russell L. Robinson, Dr. Charles R. Hoffer, and Dr. Timothy S. Brophy. Students study with top scholars in music theory and music history. The University of Florida is a Research 1 institution and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). 


The Summer Program

Beginning in summer 2008, the College of Fine Arts School of Music at the University of Florida is pleased to offer the Master of Music in Music Education in an innovative summer/distance learning format. Designed for practicing teachers, students come to campus for two six-week summer sessions to work directly with faculty in interactive classes. During the intervening years they complete additional degree requirements with online offerings. The course of study is designed to be completed in two years. On campus courses are delivered in three-hour sessions for three weeks each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the GRE?
Yes. The GRE is required for admission to the graduate school. However, we have not yet denied anyone admission based on their GRE scores.

Do I have to wait for my GRE scores to arrive before I can apply?
No. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible so that your application is on record.

Do I need to audition?
No. Only performance majors need to audition. The Master of Music in Music Education degree is not a performance degree.

Be sure to read steps 1 and 2, since you are being admitted into the School of Music. In addition to your transcripts, statement of purpose, and letter of interest, you will need to prepare a portfolio. Is financial aid available for this program?

What is the daily schedule?
You will have classes Monday-Friday each week (except Friday, July 4). Your morning classes will meet from 8:30am-11:30am. Your afternoon classes will meet from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. You will have 11:30am-1:00pm free for lunch. 

Can I commute?
Only if you live within an easily drivable distance of the campus. During the week, your schedule will be busy with 6 hours of classes daily and assignments to complete at night. The weekends are free. If you are not within driving distance you should secure housing; see the list of resources we provide for suggestions.
