Group Auditions
Group auditions are held twice a year: once during the Fall term and once
during the Spring term. Auditionees will participate in a modern dance audition
class that may include ballet barre, an African dance sequence and an improvisational
exercise. Auditionees will NOT be asked to perform a prepared solo. Auditionees
must send a completed audition form. There will be an opportunity for you
to ask the faculty and current students any questions that you might have.
Dress Regulations
Leotards (or tight T-shirts for men) and tights, jazz pants or leggings. You
may want to use soft ballet slippers and jazz shoes for portions of the class.
Please do not wear any baggy warmers or other loose overdressing after the
initial warm-up. Hair should be secured away from the face. Wearing a distinctive
color or accessory that does not impair dancing is encouraged.
All auditions are held in the McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Check in begins at 8:30.

Video Audition
If there is a particular hardship involved in attending the group audition, a prospective student may request a video/DVD audition. This involves submitting a tape or DVD, a completed audition on-line form, and two confidential letters of recommendation. The dance faculty will either inform you of the results or ask you to schedule an individual audition using our ongoing classes.
The requirements of the video/DVD audition are as follows:
1. Full-size VHS format or DVD with only the audition on the recording.
2. Solo performance-either studio or in concert.
3. 10-15 minutes of ballet barre and/or center floor demonstrating alignment and control at your highest level of proficiency.
4. 5-10 minutes of classroom or performance studies demonstrating your highest technical and performance abilities. There should be two selections in different styles.
5. If you wish to transfer in composition/choreography course credits, include a bit of your own choreography.
6. Label the tape/DVD with your name and "Video Audition for the BFA in Dance" and the date you wish to enter the program.
7. Include notes (either on the recording or in writing) on the nature/identity of the selections.
8. If you wish to have the tape/DVD returned, include a self-addressed reinforced envelope.
9. Please send a completed audition form with the audition tape/DVD so that we can view the audition within the content of your background. Include a brief statement of your dance-related goals and your reason(s) for applying to the University of Florida.
10. Please have two confidential letters of recommendation sent under separate cover. At least one letter should be from a dance teacher. The letter should discuss:
a. Your artistic ability and educability (talent, discipline, processing feedback, openness, etc.)
b. Your academic ability and achievement
c. Your sense of responsibility and ensemble (dependability, emotional stability, ability to work in groups, willingness to work behind the scenes as well as in the spotlight, etc.)
d. Other information concerning your way of working or the type of environment in which you would best grow toward your goals.
