Undergraduate
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance degree program includes four
interlocking streams of dance in a Twenty-First century approach to dance
study: choreography and performance, intercultural dance studies, dance
and medicine, and dance theatre. The program trains dancers and choreographers
using an inclusive interpretation of contemporary dance as the organizing
principle for development of the today's artist. Dance is studied as a major
performing art impacting a broad range of artistic, cultural, intellectual
and social spheres. Audition
is required.
The B.F.A. is built upon a strong performance core and
offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary studies and experiences
through our Center for World Arts, Center for the Arts in Healthcare
Research and Education (CAHRE) and Digital Worlds Institute. Courses
include: dance appreciation and history; composition; modern, ballet, and
jazz technique; African and other world dance forms; teaching methods;
Labananalysis; Pilates; theatre and music courses; and dance in healing.
Within the curriculum and programs offered through the School of Theatre
and Dance, students perform in several departmental companies (Agbedidi
Africa Dance Ensemble, the Florida MOD Project, Neta Dance, and Shadow Dance
Theatre), faculty concerts, Summer Dance Intensive productions, Diversity
Artists Projects featuring UF dancers with a cutting-edge professional
company, student choreography showcases, student-run companies, and
departmental musicals/plays. Touring experience is provided through
community outreach, participation in the Florida Dance Association and the
American College Dance Festival Association (including National Festivals),
and the UF/NYC Exchange including performances and networking experiences in
New York City. Internationally, UF dancers have performed with the UF/Israel
Exchange, in the Netherlands, Edinburgh (Scotland), and St. Petersburg,
Russia. The ideal graduate is prepared as a performer, choreographer,
producer and/or teacher with possible additional abilities to relate dance
to technology, specific cultures, theatre, and healthcare.

Dance for Nonmajors
UF Dance courses are open and available to all eligible UF students.
Enrollment in most technique courses is departmentally controlled, meaning
that the student cannot sign up for these courses without the instructor’s
permission. The exceptions are: Fundamentals of Dance, West African, Dance
Appreciation, and some sections of World Dance. Students who wish to take
Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Modern, Ballet, or Jazz must take a
placement class to enroll in these courses. Students may be placed in these
courses by attending the corresponding class the prior semester and asking
the instructor for placement or, if early placement classes are not offered,
by attending the FIRST CLASS MEETING of the term for which you wish to
register. Students who are selected to enroll in UF dance courses will be
assisted by the instructor with enrollment and Kevin Austin, SOTD
Undergraduate Advisor, will be given your name for course registration.
Descriptions of UF dance courses may be found at: http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/programs/courses/theatre.html
Dance Minor
The dance minor is designed for students who wish to pursue the study of
dance while maintaining a separate primary academic interest. The dance
minor is a 17-credit program that has both core and elective components,
thus providing both a solid general background and the opportunity to tailor
the minor program to meet individual interests. This program is designed
to bring the student in close contact with not only classroom expertise
in technique, but the enriching artistic and production aspects of dance.
Additional information on the dance minor may be found at http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog/programs/minors/dance.html
