Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register for courses if the schedule says DEP-X and there
is no section number?
Because Theatre and Dance programs are "limited access" many of our courses
are "departmentally controlled" and open to majors only. See the School
of Theatre and Dance undergraduate advisor for assistance during registration.
Is it possible to double major?
Theatre students who wish to dual major are encouraged to enter the B.A.
in General Theatre program. This degree allows students to take 24 upper-division
elective hours which can be applied to the second major.
Can I register for theatre and dance courses if I'm majoring in
something else?
Yes. If courses are not departmentally controlled, you may register for
theatre and dance courses. Students interested in taking dance performance
courses will need to take a placement exam prior to registration. Popular
classes for non-majors include: ORI 2000 (Oral Performance and Interpretation
in Literature), THE 2000 (Theatre Appreciation), TPP 2100 (Acting for Non-Majors),
TPP 3124 (Improvisation and Social /Political Issues), DAN 2100 (Dance Appreciation),
and DAA 1000 (Fundamentals of Dance).
When should I audition or submit my portfolio for the B.F.A. programs
in theatre or dance?
Incoming freshman and transfer students are encouraged to audition/interview
Fall or Spring before their intended date of entry into the program. Current
freshman may audition in Fall or Spring of your freshman year. If you are
not successful at your first audition/interview, you may audition/interview
again with faculty permission. Fall and Spring audition/interview dates
and times are posted on the School of Theatre and Dance website.
Can I minor in theatre or dance?
Yes. We offer three minors: general theatre, theatre production, and dance.
All three minors have specific requirements. Please see the School of Theatre
and Dance undergraduate advisor for information about these minors.
Students who wish to take ballet, jazz, or modern dance courses must take a placement exam to enroll in these courses. Students take placement exams by attending the corresponding class the prior sememster and asking the instructor for placement or by attending the FIRST CLASS MEETING of the term for which you wish to register and telling the instructor you are there to be placed. Students who are eligible to enroll in UF dance courses will be given an instructor permission slip which should be take to the SOTD undergraduate advisor for course registration.
