  • How many students are in the School of Music?
    Approximately 250: 170 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students (Masters and Ph.D.)
       
  • Is this a large or small School of Music compared to other schools? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
    We are a smaller School of Music. As a result, we can provide more individual attention to all of our students. Each music major studies privately with a professor as opposed to a Graduate Teaching Assistant.
      
  • Where can I find information on how to apply to the School of Music?
    Information can be obtained from the School of Music (SOM) web site at http://www.arts.ufl.edu/music. You may also request a packet in the mail by filling out the "information request" form.
       
  • When do the auditions take place?
    Incoming freshmen and minors are expected to audition in November, February, or March. Transfer students and those wishing to audition for Band Scholarships only (not Friends of Music) audition in March.  Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 audition dates are as follows:
    • October 27, 2007
      Early Decision and Regular Decision I applicants, Music Majors
    • November 10, 2007
      Regular Decision II Applicants, Music Majors and Minors
    • February 2, 2008
      Transfer Students, Non-majors, and Band Scholarship Auditions
         
  • What is involved in the audition process?
    A typical audition day involves the following sections:
    • Interview
    • Performance Audition
    • Question/Answer session with current students
    • Piano Skills (optional)

    Each part plays an important role in the audition process. Student should take every step very seriously.

  • Do I have to be admitted to the University before I can audition for the School of Music?
    No, actually, most students will not find out about their admission status to the University of Florida until after the audition process is completed.
       
  • What is involved in the audition process?
    A typical audition day involves the following sections:
    • Theory Placement Test
    • Interview
    • Sightsinging
    • Performance Audition
    • Piano Skills (optional)

    Each part plays an important role in the audition process. Student should take every step very seriously.
       

  • Do I need to audition to be in an ensemble? What are the requirements?
    Yes, most ensembles require an audition. You may find out more details about ensemble participation at
    http://www.arts.ufl.edu/music.
       
  • Is it possible to double major?
    Yes, students who wish to pursue a double major are encouraged to do the BA in Performance or the BM in Combination with an Outside Field. The BA in Performance allows a student to take 30 elective hours - in this case those hours would be applied to the other major. BM in Combination with an Outside Field allows students to choose 27 hours in a specific field which also can be applied to the second major.
       
  • Who is eligible to receive scholarships?
    All music majors are eligible for Friends of Music and Band Scholarships based on their audition results. Music minors and non-majors are only eligible for Band Scholarships.
       
  • Are scholarships based on need or talent?
    School of Music Scholarships are given solely based on talent.
       
  • When will I find out if I have been accepted to the School of Music?
    Incoming Freshmen who audition in November and February are notified by the end of March. Transfer students who audition in March are notified in April.
       
  • What happens if I am accepted to the School of Music but not to UF?
    In such cases, if a student is offered a music scholarship, School of Music may be able to take your case to the Admissions Committee to be reconsidered.
       
  • Will I have lessons with a professor or a graduate teaching assistant?
    Music majors will always have lessons with a professor. Minors may or may not be with a Graduate Teaching Assistant depending on the available space in the studio.
       
  • Can music majors study abroad?
    YES!!!!! Study abroad opportunities are available to music students. The School of Music also has a study abroad program in cooperation with Salzburg College.

  • Can non-majors be in Marching Band?
    Non-majors can participate in Marching Band, as well as all of the other ensembles at UF. All of the ensembles in the School of Music are open to students of all majors, however, some may require an audition.
       
  • How are the voice teachers assigned?
    Voice teachers are assigned the first week of classes. New students to the voice area are required to sing for the voice faculty for studio placement. Students should check the Vocal/Choral bulletin board at the School of Music for the date of these auditions and the sign-up sheet for an audition time.
       
  • I passed the AP Theory test - can I test out of taking a theory course?
    All students are required to take the Theory Placement exam. Your score on this exam will determine which level of theory you are placed in.
      
  • How important is it that music majors to attend Preview?
    Preview is one of the most important things an incoming freshman should do upon acceptance to the University of Florida. It is during Preview that all freshmen are registered for their courses.
       
  • Do music majors have the opportunity to participate in Greek life (fraternities/sororities)?
    Music majors will have the opportunity to participate in Greek life. There are music fraternities and sororities that the students may want to consider:
    • Sigma Alpha Iota - honorary music sorority for women
    • Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia - honorary music fraternity for men
    • Tau Beta Sigma - band sorority
    • Kappa Kappa Psi - band fraternity (men and women)
