Third Year Review

Third Year Review

The Process
  •  The Faculty Member
  •  The Evaluation
  •  Letter of Review

The Faculty Member
Early in the Spring Semester of the third year of his/her tenure-accruing appointment, the faculty member will be notified by the School Director of the requirement to submit a “Review Packet” and will establish the deadline for that submission.

The faculty member is then responsible for preparing the “Review Packet” using the current year’s UF Tenure and Promotion Guidelines material (see link). The College provides a template (see link) for use in preparing this Packet. The faculty member may also provide a separate “Supporting Materials” packet.
The Review Packet, along with any “Supporting Materials” is submitted directly to the School Director.

The Evaluation
(A) Tenured faculty from the School will review the packet and assess the performance to date. The assessment will address the issues normally considered in the tenure and promotion deliberations and will determine whether satisfactory progress toward tenure and promotion is being made.
It is recognized that some activities, such as receiving a book contract, may take place after the third year. For that reason, the kinds of expectations and indications of success that are appropriate after three years will also be discussed.

The School tenured faculty will consider such things as:
• Does the candidate’s teaching meet school expectations or making steady progress in that direction?
• Has the candidate chaired or served as a member of masters and doctoral committees?
• Is the candidate preparing her/himself to attract external/internal funding to support her/his research?
• Has the candidate presented papers, performed or exhibited in appropriate venues and are the number and quality of these acceptable?
• Has the candidate published at an acceptable rate and in appropriate journals?
• Is the candidate appropriately involved in professional service activities at the local, state, national and international levels?
• Is the candidate beginning to establish a regional and national reputation in his/her field?
• Does the candidate’s record suggest a teaching and research trajectory that is likely to lead to the rank of Associate Professor (and later, Full Professor)

(B) The School tenured faculty in each school will meet to discuss the 3d Year Review faculty member, and assign a ranking from one of the following categories:
• Exceeds School Expectations
• Achieves School Expectations
• Somewhat Below School Expectations
• Unsatisfactory
• Abstain

Letter of Review

The School Director will draft a letter of review based on the Review Packet and discussion among and rankings from the School’s tenured faculty.

The letter will identify strengths and weaknesses in the faculty member’s record and, if necessary, make clear recommendations about how the faculty member may improve her/his packet and performance. The goal is to offer thoughtful and constructive assessments and suggestions that will help the candidate to meet college and university requirements for tenure and promotion.

The Director will meet with the faculty member to provide a copy of and discuss the letter of review. A copy will be placed in the faculty member’s personnel file.
The letter will be forwarded to the Dean, and the Dean will contact the Provost and confirm that the review has taken place.
