With a focus on music criticism and analysis of Alban Berg’s Lulu in the context of early twentieth-century Viennese culture, Silvio dos Santos’s recent research explores interdisciplinary approaches to unveil the symbolism behind Berg’s musical choices as reflected in the autograph sources and the finished work. Dr. dos Santos has published articles and reviews in the Journal of Musicology and Notes, and his book Construction of Identity: Alban Berg and His Opera “Lulu” is forthcoming.

He has presented papers at the Echo Conference (UCLA), Società Italiana di Musicologia, Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, as well as local and national meetings of the American Musicological Society. Dr. dos Santos is the recipient of the 2002 Hollace Anne Schafer Memorial Award and the 2002 Paul A. Pisk Prize from the American Musicological Society, as well as research grants from the Center for German and European Studies at Brandeis University and Max Kade Foundation.
